Pitt County leaders say they're concerned a much needed half cent sales tax increase could die in the state government.
Pitt County leaders called an emergency meeting Monday to discuss what can be done so that the local option sales tax bill doesn't die on the senate floor.
The proposed half cent sales tax would apply to everything except food purchased at the grocery store and automobiles and would go to fund nearly $300,000,000 in school facility construction for Pitt County Schools and Pitt Community College.
Pitt County originally proposed a one-cent sales tax increase two years ago, but that proposal never came up for vote. Local officials want the legislature to vote on the measure before it goes into recess in a couple of weeks.
