National recognition for East Carolina University's School of Nursing. The nurse-midwifery education program recently received its ten year accreditation from the American College of Nurse -Midwives. ECU's program is the only one in the entire state and one of just a few in the country. Midwives are individuals, usually a woman, trained to assist women in childbirth. The program was commended for its hands-on approach and focus on service for rural areas. The nurse-midwifery program at ECU began in 1991.
