New research confirms there are significant risks linked to the pain killer Vioxx.

A group of researchers studied follow-up data one year after patients stopped taking the drug. They found the risk for heart attack and stroke among Vioxx users remained twice that seen in participants who didn't use the drug. Experts say the effects seem to apply to all the drugs in this class, however more research is needed.

Vioxx was taken off the market in 2004.

What is actually concerning is why does the FDA pass these drugs in the first place? Why are the drugs allowed on the market if they are so dangerous? Seems to me that there is accountability lacking here...gravely. Before you know it, the neo-conservatives will have found fault with ALL prescription pain meds, and we will no longer have access to that which helps chronic pain suffers like myself. I know that day is coming...I was very sick w/ Bronchitis some weeks back. My doctor was very apologetic when he informed me that he could no longer prescribe Tussinex, a very effective cough medicine with hydrocodone....The FDA has banned it. Why? Because there are a few people out there that cannot follow a prescription? Because stupid parents give it to their kids? Why shold I have to suffer for somebody elses lack of responsibility? This whole mindset that allows people to blame others for their stupidity or carelessness is beyond riduculous. It is dangerous. Big Brother? He's here.
