For the first year ever, the City of Greenville held a kids triathlon to promote health and wellness.

Close to 90 kids-- ages six to 14 signed up today.

They had to swim 25 or 200 yards, depending on age, and then bike two miles before running a half mile to two.

The idea came after statistics showed, 50 percent of children in Pitt County are overweight.

An alarming fact, that got Barbara Avery thinking of ways to keep kids from watching TV or playing video games and instead get out and exercise.

"There's just been so many things add that discourage kids from being physically active now that we honestly that we need to focus on what we need to do to make kids more active." says Barbara Avery
City of Greenville Recreation Supervisor.

Not only are they promoting fitness, but the gift of giving.

All proceeds for entering the triathlon went to Special Olympics of Pitt County.

I wish this had received more publicity up front. Sounds like a great event. Sorry we didn't know about it until afterwards.

This was a great event held for the children of Eastern NC, and Greenville. I hope more people will comment on the good things that are happening in this city and county rather than focusing on the negative. Events like this help build character in our youth. Every child I saw yesterday continued to push and tried their hardest to complete the triathalon. I didn't see anyone quit, and that says a lot about today's youth. I hope Greenville and other cities will continue to promote health in Eastern NC's children. I'm proud of every one of those kids.
