Okay, so you've been driving between Washington and Chocowinity on Highway 17 in Beaufort County and thinking, " What is that crane doing?"
Turns out crews are driving test pilings for the new Highway 17 Bypass, to see where the soil is best for bridge construction. This is one of four test sites. The pilings are enormous... They are about 111 feet long and weight 72-thousand pounds each. The construction manager says working on this small site beside Highway 17 doesn't leave room for mistakes.
All the testing should be completed by the end of July.
