Anywhere from nearly five to eight inches of rain caused serious flooding in Raleigh, forcing people to move themselves and their belongings to higher ground. Several areas were impassable, while some vehicles flooded to their roofs.
The scene was similar in nearby Cary where parts of roads like Highway 64 had to be closed because of high water.
Flooding also shut down a major mall in Raleigh. Crabtree Valley Mall was forced to close at noon because of a nearby flooded creek. The parking lots around the mall were filled with water, up to the top of roofs of a few remaining cars.
Nearby roads were also covered, flooding vehicles. Water got into the ground level parking garages but not the stores.
