Funeral services were held in at the First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro Friday afternoon for Hugh Morton, the famed photographer, developer, environmentalist and promoter of his beloved North Carolina.
Morton inherited Grandfather Mountain and made the highest peak in the Blue Ridge Mountains a top tourist attraction. He was also a leader in bringing the battleship USS North Carolina to Wilmington and preserving the Cape Hatteras lighthouse.
Morton died of cancer at age 85 on June first.
Among the speakers was Bill Friday, former president of the University of North Carolina system. Dignitaries from across the state also attended the funeral.
