Actors for Senator Barack Obama have put their support behind the Senator by traveling to colleges across the state to get students registered to vote.

Ellen Pompeo who currently plays "Meredith Grey" in the show "Grey's Anatomy", and Danielle Panabaker, star of "Shark", spoke to a modest crowd of students this afternoon at East Carolina University.

The women are traveling from campus to campus to encourage college students to vote early.

Since North Carolina is considered a battle ground state in the election, the Obama campaign pays from them to travel to stump for him.

This can also become a scarifice for the actresses who became vocal about their politically views while working on popular T.V. shows.

PREVIOUS STORY:

Ellen Pompeo who currently plays “Meredith Grey” in the show Grey’s Anatomy, and Danielle Panabaker, star of Shark, will be at East Carolina University Sunday, to speak in support of Barack Obama.

Pompeo and Panabaker will address students in the Mendenhall Great Room at the Mendenhall Student Center at 11:30 AM Sunday about the importance of registering to vote and getting involved in this year’s election. The voter registration deadline is October 10, but early voting starts on October 16.

Pompeo and Panabaker will also make stops at UNC Wilmington, Campbell University, Meredith College, UNC Pembroke and NC State University.

Details for the East Carolina event follows:

Sunday, September, 28

Thank you for answering my question. The reason that I asked is that normally ECU pays people to speak or lecture there.

KP, when your husband signed on that dotted line and took that oath, he was agreeing to go to war if the need arose. Whats up with all these people saying that someone joined the military but not to go and fight a war? These people need to take some notes from the WW II generation. How about if they had felt the way folks do now? And hey, they were drafted into the military. If they had been like many of todays generation,we would be speaking German or Japanese, if we were even here. Also, we need more Generals like George S. Patton instead of all these wannabe politicians that they call Generals today.Especially Wes Clark.

I would put about as much faith in what an actor says as I would the little lying red-headed kid two doors down. They act, allowing them to play at something their not. They are paid exorbitant money. It doesn't take a college degree to be an actor. What vast storehouse of knowledge are they basing their opinions on? Who cares what these people say? Certainly not me.

Posted by: WITN? Location: NC on Sep 30, 2008 at 03:12 PM
I'll ask for the third time. Who is footing the bill for these celebraties to come to ECU and other UNC universities? Who's paying for it? Is it state (taxpayer) funds? If WITN won't investigate this (or report what they already know), then I guess I'll have to contact the State Auditor's Office to find out. This is a valid question WITN. Why haven't you informed the public on this?

EDITOR'S NOTE: This was a campaign event and either the Obama campaign footed the cost, or the celebrities did themselves. Just because it happened at a public university doesn't mean taxpayer funds were involved.

If nobody's noticed yet & it doesn't take much to notice, most national tv stations, tv shows, news media (but Fox News) are 100% Obama. It's so one-sided it is sickening to watch. That's why people say they're not watching TV anymore. The young people who don't have to pay house/property taxes yet, you go vote for Obama. You'll see in a few years how your views begin changing. I work for a living, & don't like paying for those who don't, our soldiers are NOT fighting "for nothing", (shame on those who think so), read some history books to get in touch with what "being American" means, or go live somewhere else if you're not going to respect our war veterans, and it takes parents to raise children, not communities (what hogwash).

James, Steve is correct. People your age believe in the obama fantasy world because you have very little life/political experience. You seem to believe that obama can make everything happen that he claims. Not reality. And yes, regardless of what you might think, celebrities do attempt to use their public status to try and influence you. They think their opinion is the only way because the majority of them think they are a little more important than you and I.

Posted by: James Location: Greenville on Sep 30, 2008 at 09:18 AM
"Blessed are the young, for they shall inherit the national debt."- Herbert Hoover. Steven, your kind of attitude is another thing wrong with this country. Rather than attempt to educate, you just sit around on the computer and call our generation stupid. If there's something wrong with our youth today, who is responsible? The parents. I'll say it again. Parents. That's a huge platform of Obama's: Fulfilling responsibilities within the family. It takes a community to raise a child. I may be young, but that is something I understand. I wasn't old enough to vote for Bush in his second term, so citizens my age had absolutely no bearing on the way the country has been organized since. Now that we have a voice, again you want us silenced. Eventually in life, children grow and have to clean up after their parents. Now is the time and a majority of us are making the right decision for our nation. We don't need Grandpa War-Story and I-Live-Near-Russia Hockey Mom; The nation need leaders.

Ashley... "take a look around and notice that these men and women CHOSE to go over there no one was forced to go, These men and women signed up becuase they wanted to fight for there country." You have lost your (deleted) mind! My husband JUST returned from Iraq on Sunday from his THIRD deployment. When he was 20, he certainly did not join the Corps with the intentions of fighting in a war. MOST military personnel needed the money for their families to survive. He has been very successful in the MC and that is why he stays...he has a family to support. If he did have a choice whether to deploy or not, trust me...he'd be at home with me and his 2 beautiful children. And YOU are the one who sounds stupid. Anyone who would admit they voted for Bush TWICE, is definitely the stupid one. LOL!

Edited slightly

Why is it that celebs like Oprah and David Letterman have any bearing on the Presidential election?

Posted by: Ashley Location: Washington on Sep 29, 2008 at 07:29 PM
LOL!!!! thats what we are doing James given our opinions right here.and I dont hate obama, dont hate anyone..just dont have the same views as him. man, some people really need to look at what they say. some people try so hard to look and sound smart they end up looking and sounding stupid!

WITN I have to ask why was Shynes post was edited the way it was? You might as well left it up because everyone can tell what was being said and as a Republican I am offended. If someone on here uses the N- word would you only blank out part of it so people can still tell what it is ? NO.I feel the word should be removed completely or the post should not be posted, as some of mine have not been posted.

Editor: Judgement call. Most editors probably would have deleted it. I posted. For more info, read my blog "The Comment Approval Process" under the "From The Big Chair" heading. CM

Who but a moron would really care what these Hollywierd celbrities think one way or another? They really show what good judgement that they have with all the drugs, alcohol, promiscuous sex, 2 week marriages, and so forth. I reckon the Hollyweird celebrities want to vote for a weird celebrity president (Obama). You know, if California fell into the Pacific it would not be a great loss to the US. Also, one more thing, look at how Hollyweird celebs always want to ban guns, yet the majority of them have made thier fortunes off of guns. How boring would action movies(which are Hollyweirds biggest draws) be if there were no guns, or violence of any kind? Makes the Hollyweird celebs look kinda hypocritical, doesnt it?

Posted by: Steve Location: Kinston on Sep 29, 2008 at 02:09 PM
I had to laugh at James blog. I have money that says they are two bleeding heart liberals who know that most students on college campuses will vote liberal due to their lack of time on this planet. I was their age once and believed in fairy tales too. I can hardly wait until they get my age and see life as it really is. I will bet tthat they become a little more inclined to think more conservativelly about their finances and their possesions when they have to earn them.

Posted by: James Location: Greenville on Sep 29, 2008 at 01:45 PM
The celebrity-haters here clearly did not attend the seminar. Ellen Pompeo and Danielle Panabaker didn't simply stroll onto campus and say, "HEY! Vote for this guy just because I'm on TV." They are using their status to inform young voters about registering and choosing the candidate that supports the issues important to young Americans. Believe it or not, celebrities are people and are able to make form their own opinions. If you want your opinion heard, Red State (it has been for a majority of the last 25 years), then go out and volunteer your time to inform others on your stances. Like it or not, you can't pick and choose who you wish to be silenced. That's Anti-American if anything is. Also, since when was being likable or popular been a negative trait in a presidential candidate? Why would people elect a president they generally dislike?! I am absolutely befuddled by the reasons people pull out of their hats just to smear more hate for Obama.

Posted by: Dwayne Location: Greenville on Sep 29, 2008 at 12:48 PM
But remember, the number one celebrity will remain Sen.Obama. His acting kind of fell apart during the debate. You can't make thru 4 years with just acting the part.

Posted by: Red State Location: Washington Co. on Sep 29, 2008 at 11:52 AM
I think its fine if these celebrities want to spend their time speaking for Obama. They have every right to support their candidate in any way they choose. I just can't figure out why anyone would be influenced by what they think. They have no particular political experiene that gives them insight that the average person doesn't have. They just actors on tv shows. Sure they can have their opinion, just don't think it counts for any more than mine or yours or anyone elses.

All I know is that my retirement money in the stock market has gone down almost 50% in the last seven years and something tells me a man with a dozen houses hasn't a single worry about retiring. Some Obama supports are young, but most McCain supporters are spoiled children.

Jamesey, Jamesey, Jamesey Are we getting testy? Was I trying to appear smart? Is that what you got out of my comment? Wow! you missed the whole point. Yes, we are all tired of the blame game. But that too can be placed in the laps of Congress, as well. Keep in mind the Congress is controlled by the Dems. Sad! Sad! Sad!

Posted by: James Location: Greenville on Sep 28, 2008 at 07:58 PM
Confused: Putting quotes around random words does not make you appear smart. I didn't even write any of the items you quoted. Again, putting words into people's mouths. Rather than defend the politicians you listed as qualified presidential candidates, you continue to blame to your heart's content. A majority of the country has had enough of this blame game. We want action and not the kind that has been destroying American lives. I'll show you the last twenty-five years in a format everyone here should be able to understand: A cartoon. http://blogs.venturacountystar.com/greenberg/qqxsgFiscalConservative.jpg

Not voting for obama is not because i dont like blacks..why is it always a "black" thing, so if i dont vote for mccain is it a "white" thing(no its not) get over it, not voting for obama because i dont want my taxes raised, and another thing im so sick and tired of hearing about the men and women over seas fighting...take a look around and notice that these men and women CHOSE to go over there noone was forced to go, These men and women signed up becuase they wanted to fight for there country.people sit around and fuss because other countrys come over here and hurt us and then when we do something about it people fuss about that to. and YES i voted for Bush the past two times and i would vote for him again.look at what you people are saying, because most people sound stupid.

Posted by: UGH Location: gville on Sep 28, 2008 at 03:09 PM
Ryan, I hope you realize one day that this life is temporary and the "mess" that we are in today will not be anything to the "mess" people who don't believe in God will be in when they spend eternity in a burning hell. I wish you would come to my church just one Sunday and listen with an open mind and heart. Please...

Posted by: Confused Location: Greenville on Sep 28, 2008 at 02:44 PM
No James, I am not confused over the issues you think. People like you confuse me. You're right, however, I would support some of those "evil" leaders who you claim have "gotten us into the mess" we're in. The Dems in Congress have had more opportunity to straighten up the "mess" and did nothing. Furthermore, liberals, like Barney Franks, pushed through the bill to make it easier for unqualified borrowers to gain loans. (Could that have been an effort to garnish votes?) So spread the guilt around. Those who are blinded by the constant "bashing" of George Bush and refuse to believe the failures of Congress, including Obama, are the ones misrepresenting the truth. I hear very little about the fact that Pres. Bush contacted Congress over 12 times over the past couple of years warning them of the situation. But, then people like you are reluctant to and refuse to believe these facts due to the constant blame placed on Pres. Bush for everything from Katrina to coal mine disasters.

Posted by: Unknown Location: Jacksonville on Sep 28, 2008 at 02:03 PM
People who cares about the color of ones skin, you would rather see the economy go down, gas go up, our military men & women who fight for us die for nothing just because you are picking a president for the color of his skin. Bush screwed up both of his terms i bet now you hate you voted for him but have to much proud to admit it. Obama is bi-racil the way I see it you are upset because the blackness is what appears the most, give the man a chance you gave Bush two chances look what he did, it will take Obama 2 terms to clear up Bush mess. You all fell to realize that God vote is what counts and he will have the finale vote. The Bible do speaks a change will come rather you like it or not. I suggest you vote for who you think will pull us out of this mess and stop turning this into a black/white issue. Everyone deserves a fair chance.

Posted by: Ashley Location: Washington on Sep 28, 2008 at 01:55 PM
Ryan, Maybe you need to go to church and pray to this "Imaginary" person...first off God is Real. and praying works.so ill make sure i will pray for you tha god will show you that he is real and that YOU NEED him.

I hope no one votes for a presidential candidate based on the opinion of anyone else- actors/acctresses included. These 2 guys are very different in their views on government, so if you are still undecided on whom to vote for- you either don't have a clue or need to get your info somewhere other than political commercials.

Posted by: James Location: Greenville on Sep 28, 2008 at 01:12 PM
Confused: You certainly live up to your name. The politicians that you listed are involved with the administration that has eroded the middle class. How is Obama the one spreading hate when he was against invading Iraq in the first place? You're purposely misinterpreting his words to make it sound like he hates the nation as a whole when it is very clear that he doesn't. He understands that our government and citizens are not living up to our potential. I honestly cannot see how anyone (besides C.E.O.s and oil tycoons) could be satisfied with our nation's current state. How can we be the greatest country in the world when we owe billions to other superpowers? If we continue with this current administration, the only people that will be making money will be the gravediggers.

Great, just what ECU needs, to be associated with Hollywood's Liberal Leftists....it's kind of funny though, "Pretend" doctors coming to a real University (and Med School), to give us their warped ideas on why we should vote for a "pretend" politician.

Why is it shyne that Republicans are racists because they aren't supporting Obama. According to that theory, blacks are racists who are not supporting McCain. Beating the "dead horse" of racism has lost its influence. Some of the most racists people I have ever known are Democrats, black and white. There are many blacks I would vote for for President: Rice, Powell, Watts, etc. You may not know these names, but all would lead this country in the direction it should go. Obama? I don't think so. He has done nothing but preach devisiveness and hate for those he thinks are different from him. He has attacked this country and everything it has stood for, while at the same time "milked" it for all the personal opportunities he has had. He preaches how the "big, bad rich CEO's" are evil and owe everything they have made to the "little guy". His whole mantra is based on negativity. According to him, there is nothing good about America. His socialistic views mean DOOM for America!!!

First learn how to spell, second if you are that naive to stop watching a show just because one of the actresses is not for the same candidate as you then that is just crazy. The best thing for you to do is stop watching tv and don't get on the Internet. If our internet provider is for Obama, what are you going to do now?

Posted by: Question for WITN Location: NC on Sep 28, 2008 at 09:23 AM
You didn't post my last comment, so I'll repeat it. Who is sponsoring these celebrities to speak? If it is democratic student groups, then that's fine, since all of the speakers have been pro Obama. If these speakers are being sponsored, asked to appear or paid by university departments then there should be a balance and celebrities supporting McCain should also be asked to speak. These are public institutions and are owned by the taxpayers of NC. If state funds are being used to bring these speakers to ECU or sponsor them, then either balance it out or cut it out. WITN, in the interest of fairness, please investigate this and report your findings. Thanks.

Posted by: unknown Location: willaimston, nc on Sep 28, 2008 at 09:23 AM
Who really gives a crap if these nuts want to support obama. I for one will never watch the show again. McCain for President. These folks had better start to wise up. They think the world is in bad shape now, put Obama in and see how much worse we will be. ECU will do anything to get in the news it looks like.

Posted by: Lady K Location: greenville on Sep 28, 2008 at 09:02 AM
Just because celebrities are the ones who are speaking for a good cause does not mean that they do not know what they are talking about. Yeah guys who are complaining about the time celebrities are putting into the election did not complain about the money that they are donating.

Posted by: WITN I have Question? Location: NC on Sep 28, 2008 at 07:58 AM
WITN: Who or what groups are scheduling, requesting and/or hosting these celebrities? I noticed that all of them are campaigning for Barak Obama. These universities are public institutions. If the speakers are being sponsored by the Universities, then there should be a balance between celebrities supporting each candidate. So far, everything I've seen has been one sided and for the democratic candidate. Please research and find out who is paying for, or sponsoring these speakers. If it's a democratic student group, I have no problem with it, because republican student groups should get off their butts and do the same. But it it's being paid for or sponsored by university departments/staff or administrations then there should be a balance and speakers for both parties should be included. These universities are owned by NC taxpayers after all.

Maybe Obama wants to be in the movies. Thats his motive is to be a movie star. He would make a lot of money $$$$$, more on TV then being President. I could see him on a afternoon TV talk show.
