Three people from Eastern Carolina have been indicted in a student loan scam. Federal prosecutors say the group scammed a bank out of $1.2 million.
29-year-old Melissa Renee Heggie of Grimesland, 27-year-old Marvin R. Heggie of Raleigh, 28-year-old Travis S. Hunter of Grimesland and 23-year-old Derrick King of Aurora are charged with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud.
The indictment says the Heggies recruited people to get their social security card and identification. Melissa Heggie is accused of filling out fake student loan applications to Chase Bank. Authorities say they submitted a fake bill from East Carolina University and fake W-2 forms.
Authorities say when the suspects got the student loan check, they would give half to the student they recruited and keep half for themselves. Those checks, authorities say, ranged from $10,000 to $28,000. The four are accused of ripping off Chase Bank for $1.2 million in just a little over a year.
