A murder suspect who managed to escape from authorities even though he was wearing leg irons is back behind bars.
Lawmen say 23-year-old Eddie Lee Ellis escaped from a jail transport in Wilson County at the Ward Boulevard and Tarboro Street area just before three Tuesday afternoon.
Ellis managed to get out of his leg irons, but was still wearing a waist chain, handcuffs and an orange jumpsuit when he took off.
Authorities say Ellis was captured less than a mile from where he got away. He was hiding under a house. Ellis has been convicted and served prison time before. He's charged with murder following a deadly shooting in 2004.
