She's recovering from a crack cocaine addiction and has lost her kids because of it. Now, 26-year old Amber Dezern of Wayne County is among a handful of people attending the new family drug treatment court in Wayne County in an attempt to get their kids back.
The program is one of only a few in the state where the courts are working closely with people like Amber to help straighten out their lives and reunite them with their kids. Right now, Amber gets to see her kids one day a week.
She could graduate from the program later this year and could regain custody, but before that happens she has to continue to attend court once every two weeks, test negative for drugs and alcohol, maintain a job, and have appropriate housing.
All of those goals are spelled out through a collaborative effort by the court, which works to help Amber, and others achieve those goals.
