Child advocates are calling on North Carolina's congressional candidates to boost education and health insurance programs.

Goldsboro pediatrician Dr. David Tayloe said Tuesday the government's low reimbursement rates discourage doctors from caring for children under public health insurance programs. Tayloe said increasing those payments would help ensure access.

Louisa Warren with the North Carolina Justice Center also called on lawmakers to lower the household income threshold for child tax credits. Warren said the current $25,000 minimum prevents low-income families from qualifying for the full amount.

Other advocates who spoke at the Action for Children North
Carolina event renewed calls to reform No Child Left Behind and juvenile justice programs.

I am told by local authorities, part of the problem has to do with the illegals children in the area. They have no heath insurance and have burdened doctors offices with debt. Some will pay back and others leave the area. This problem with illegals needs to be addressed by NC government. This is a democrat problem in this state. They simply ignore the problem. Long term, this will bankrupt hospitals. The state needs to look at the whole picture including jobs for locals that have gone to illegals under the false pretense that our folks don't want to do the work. Clinton signed NAFTA which brought some jobs to overseas, however, we have been cutting our feet off in this state.

Don't blame the Doc's. They are trying to make a living like everyone else. The medicaid reimbursement rate is very low. Yet hospital ER's are full of medicaid patients. I forgo the ER experience simply because I can not afford it, and my insurance reimburses better if I wait to see the Doc in his office. Maybe medicaid should come down on those abusing their ER privileges. $$ saved could be used to increase the reimbursement rates, which may entice more doc's to the rural areas. Just a thought.
