ECU Director of Athletics Terry Holland has issued a statement regarding the investigation of whether excessive force was used on fans who stormed Bagwell Field on Saturday.

Click here to see the video.

Holland emphasized the storming the field may look "like a lot of fun on television," but it can be very dangerous for the people who are on the field, including players and the coaching staff.

A Message From Terry Holland
ECU Director of Athletics Delivers Letter To The Pirate Nation
Sept. 7, 2008

To the Pirate Nation:

East Carolina University's fans in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium have been a tremendously important part of the game plan that has allowed the East Carolina coaches and players to achieve national distinction for our university. The Pirate Nation was at its best last night as a team of determined Pirates battled the Number Eight West Virginia University Mountaineers on the field.

The performance on the field and in the stands was truly outstanding and captured the attention of the nation. However, what happened after the game ended ruined a perfect day for many who witnessed several isolated instances of those in charge of security over-reacting when fans stormed the field.

Regardless of the findings of the investigation into these incidents, the resulting "black eye" is certainly a step backward for all good Pirates who have worked so hard to provide the very best game atmosphere and sportsmanship found anywhere in intercollegiate athletics.

As the press release below indicates, a thorough investigation has been initiated and will address all reported incidents to determine the proper resolution of those situations and to prevent future similar occurrences.

While "storming the field" looks like a lot of fun on television, I can tell you from first hand experience that there are too many incidents that result in sometimes serious injury for anyone (particularly if you have a relative in the crowd) to believe that storming the field is "just good fun" for college students. Such actions jeopardize the safety of many people, including our own coaches and players.

That is why the ECU players and coaches have made it a tradition to "go to the fans" and give every fan in the stadium the recognition and respect the team feels for those who have cheered them on to victory.

Although I was unaware of the ugly incidents that were occurring, I was very disappointed for our team when they were unable to sing the fight song with the band and recognize the tremendous support from over 43,000 loyal Pirates who deserved to be recognized more than those few who ran onto the field for their own reasons.

It is my hope that our fans will respect the traditions that have been established and stay with the game plan that has taken us so far. After last season's game-ending field goal that won the UNC game, every fan stayed in the stands and waited for the two teams to exchange good wishes. Then all Pirates celebrated the great victory with all our team members in a safe and sporting environment that clearly defines the bond that has formed between this team and the Pirate Nation.

We have come too far to allow anything to stand in the way of great teamwork that has been the core of our success. ECU Athletics can not succeed at the highest level unless we are all committed to doing our very best to stay on the same page.

The cooperation we have received from the Pirate Nation has enabled us to get this far but the next steps will require even greater discipline and dedication.

Terry Holland

yea, I was at the game, and it was the best feeling i had had for many years at ECU. My heart fell when I saw the cops beatings the students. It is sad that they have probably never been college students before, or had such passion as our ECU students do. I do not believe that the students were unruly, or violent. It was a bad plan to bar the students from the field in the first place. They knew the students would come--why else did they lower the goalposts ? Protect your players and coaches, but allow the students to have the field, after all IT IS THEIR FIELD. Any closeted individual who rants about drinking students, or ECU as a party school, or that it was the students fault is just an idiot; most commenters probably weren't at the game anyway. Don't dis the students. They are our youth, right or wrong. Don't make them despise authority from the get-go. The police were wrong, had been told beforehand not to stop the students and should not have acted violently. Fire them.

OFFICER....You have got to be kidding with your statement. Your statement just goes to show how egotistical, maniacal, and arrogant SOME of the LEOs in Greenville and the surrounding areas are. You should be ashamed of yourself. So many officers think they themselves are above the law and beyond reproach, because they are cops. Well, guess what, you arent. Not all of you, but CERTAINLY some, are nothing more than bullies who were given a badge and abuse their power. There is a reason LEOs are the butt of so many jokes...and that reason is people like you!!!

BROTHER BLUE....Your claim that "officers were assaulted" is asinine and ridiculous. Officers say that to try and justify what they did, but its all nonsense. You should be ashamed of yourself for trying to justify these actions.

Posted by: Pirate Location: Greenville on Sep 9, 2008 at 01:41 PM
Well I guess Brother Blue you think that ALL cops NEVER do anything wrong. Who is the one living in a dream world. Granted the majority of cops are good honest public servants. However, there are the occasional officer who is the one that got his tail whipped all through high school and became a cop "to put and end to it". Don't say it doesn't happen and that you screen those people out because you don't. I personally know two myself, and unfortunately one is a close friend. Are you saying that putting your knee in a KIDS chest while his hands are in cuffs behind his back then punching him in the face numerous times is what he deserved? Or the cop who ran from 10 feet away to belt a KID in the face that was on the CORRECT side of the fence was in the right. If so Brother Blue you suck as a cop and its time for you to find another occupation. Brutality is brutality whether you wear a uniform or not. And your "shield" shouldn't sheild you from the law. I was there I saw it!

It is a sad occasion that this happened but some may be issuing blame before they know the complete story. Security at any event such as this is not easy as I have been their and done that. We don't know what the so called students involved did as well as if they were under the influence of alcohol/drugs as alot of people r at events like this, including non-students. Everyone who rushed the filed should be charged as they know they were not suppose 2 but this is another case where they think they know more than others and r immune from laws. They don't rush the filed when ECU looses, which will be forthcoming, and u c them even boo their team when loosing. The biggest problem with this world now is that parents do not discipline their children like was done in the 50's and 60's and in alot of cases u don't earn an education now u get one automatically if u have money, can dribble or throw a ball, or u r able to be close with the teacher. Thank u law enforcement 4 keeping u safe.

MR. HOLLAND, FOR ONCE I WOULD LIKE FOR YOU TO STOP BEING SO POLITICALLY CORRECT AND STAND UP FOR THESE STUDENTS. I AM A FATHER OF 5, AND WHEN MY KIDS ARE RIGHT I STAND UP FOR THEM. TELL ME ONE STUDENT BODY IN THE COUNTRY THAT WOULD NOT HAVE STORMED THE FIELD.I AM TRUELY EMBARISHED BY YOUR COMMENTS AND LACK OF SUPPORT FOR OUR STUDENTS. YOU OWE THE STUDENT PIRATE NATION AN APOLOGY. Editor: Please type in upper and lowercase letters.

Give me a break, As long as there have been big wins in college football, students have stormed the field. They really did nothing wrong, as a former cop, those officers were way out of line and a disgrace to the office they hold. They deserve every lawsuit thrown at them. CELEBRATION IS A GOOD THING.

Posted by: Brother Blue Location: G-ville on Sep 8, 2008 at 10:22 PM
I know what let all us cops just stop being cops...let you arm chair lawyers run the world just for a day. Maybe you can deal with all BS that you seem to think isn't so bad. ECU rakes in big money from these games...but those officers get paid so cheap....um you say poor judgment or to much force...have you seen the entire case (Officers getting Assaulted) or just when the camera guy got told to pan over to the UNLAWFUL 2nd Degree TRESPASSING and ASSAULT ON LEO. Or does ECU's backstroking LIEs make you believe that the Officers just said oh lets just beat up on this crowd of people for no reason. We do what we are told. We do what we are trained. I would love for all people to really know what it is like to stand between the good and the evil. Hell does leave a little burn when you stand at the gates keeping evil from coming out into society.

Posted by: Jesse Location: Greenville on Sep 8, 2008 at 09:31 PM
I think those few officers who used poor judgement should be held accountable. With that said so should the students who went on the field when they were told not to. If you are going to punish the officers then ECU needs to punish the students and other fans who went on the field. Those who went on the field are on Video as well. Fair is Fair!

Hey Pirate Fan hate to make you sound stupid but your fans broke alot of laws that day and one would be including a mis. of setting foot on a foot ball field without permission sorry but you should look it up next time before you post.

it is going to happen, don't fight it law enforcement officers were out of line in attacking students with force just let them go

Posted by: sherri Location: sc on Sep 8, 2008 at 07:15 PM
so sad to mar such an important victory. esp. for coaches, team. scary to see le overreacting. sickening slugfests such as clemson/usc and this hurt everybody!!!

Posted by: Pirate Fans Location: Greenville on Sep 8, 2008 at 05:55 PM
Wonderful point Jason. I guess NONE of these people (who think the students somehow "deserved" being beaten) have EVER broken ANY law. And by the way, I don't think that "storming the field" is actually breaking any law. I completely acknowledge that it is a safety issue, but for all the haters out there regarding how "stupid" our ECU fans looked by storming the field, I would like to remind you that ECU fans are not the first, nor will they be the last fans to do so! If it were not expected that fans might storm the field, the officers would not have been instructed to step aside and ensure the safety of those on the field. Those videos do not support them doing what they were asked to do anymore than the students who you are chastising for not following the announcer's appeal for fans to stay in the stands. From what I saw, the highest threat posed on the field came from the few officers who did not follow command. Our focus should be on the OUTSTANDING WIN, it's a shame it isn't!

Posted by: Whine and Cheese Location: Greenville on Sep 8, 2008 at 05:23 PM
Unk, you really need to let it go. Maybe you should have rushed the field back in 70. That might have delayed the departure of the team back to HTS and the pilot would not have flown into the side of a mountain. The crowd rushed the field, but the only ones hurting people were the power tripping KPD.... I do agree that Mr Holland in trying to get ECU to the next level, and I applaud him for that. But Unk, whatever you do, please stay away from Cameron Indoor after they win a big game. Those Methodist can get a little rowdy

Posted by: Jason Location: Greenville on Sep 8, 2008 at 05:14 PM
in response to michael's comments The biggest game I can recall is the peachbowl way back in the day.. Which by the way had about 10 thousand more fans than this game and was held in atlanta fans stormed the field didnt tear down a goal post, police beat downs and because of that no serious injuries oh and not 1 fight. Dont talk down about our fans or say they somehow deserved it. If you want to argue that it was wrong to storm the field let me ask u this have you ever gone faster than teh speed limit, walk across someone elses yard, or turn around in someones driveway which if posted was trespassing all are just as bad if not worse than what those kids did. I guess it would have been ok for u to get beat down the last time you broke the law.

Posted by: Jason Location: Greenville on Sep 8, 2008 at 05:05 PM
Dont say if I know legaly innocent until proven guilty but the videos say it all bottom line nothing warrants the behavior of the cop it is more than obvious they were going after random students looked to me they were picking the smaller ones and just beating them.

Posted by: way too bizarre on Sep 8, 2008 at 04:29 PM
I am with Shelia on this one....the comments here alone indicate that football is more important than education....just look at the spelling and grammar.

Officer and Officer too...are you kidding me? I've been in law enforcement pretty much all my life, and this is a disgrace carried out by officers on a power-trip. That was a classic case of excessive force. There was no need to body slam anybody, not to mention PUNCH them why they are down. If you agree with what those officers did, then you need to check your morals and seek counseling! Those kids meant no harm...they were celebrating an excellent victory!

Posted by: unk on Sep 8, 2008 at 04:21 PM
To jackson, Getting trampled is no joke. If the officers were wrong, then they will be punished. Storming the field might be fun in the moment, but if someone gets hurt, then it's not worth it. If Skip Holtz had been knocked to the ground during his national interview, I think he would be on the speaker telling people to get off the field. I also think it is wrong to storm any arena after a game, if you are not a player, coach, or the media. If I'm old fashioned, then so be it. I was at the game in 1970 where an entire football team and coaching staff and boosters never made it home alive in WV. That was a sobering thought. I'm glad I didn't storm the field in that victory. I would have felt empty and stupid. Now I'll let it go!!!!

Posted by: Officer too Location: Goldsboro on Sep 8, 2008 at 03:33 PM
I agree with OFFICER. Get some unarmed security officers out there and see how well that goes.. And uh, Highway Patrol was not present for the game. That was KPD. There were suppose to be several Highway Patrolmen there but they were pulled off the assignment and sent to other areas due to the tropical storm. Just because its an officer wearing gray and black does not mean its HP. If you are going to bash a member of the law enforcement community, at least try to get straight which agency they are affiliated with there, PIRATE.

Posted by: Jackson Location: kinston on Sep 8, 2008 at 03:16 PM
unk it was a joke..... i was at the game and not drunk as well, but I have been on the field back in '90 and '91 11 - 1 season. The players loved it Holtz loved it let it go! I sure hope it doesn't take another 18 years to knock off a ranked team like West Va. I would like to see it become natural.

Posted by: i agree on Sep 8, 2008 at 02:40 PM
I hope that this will show everyone that when you do something stupid, it makes everyone look that way...to the fans and police. Our Pirate Nation is the best...hats of to skip, the coaches and team. Let's not get carried away again.

Posted by: unk on Sep 8, 2008 at 12:31 PM
Anonymous, Sounds like you want Mr. Holland to leave. I guess you want Skip Holtz to leave also. Who do you think brought the coach here. To Jackson in Kinston, I don't need to drink to have spirit

No one ever stormed the field when we beat UNC at home last year, or Boise St. in Hawaii, or in Charlotte last week when we beat Va Tech. All huge games and the fans somehow stayed off of the field in every instance. Stop defending these fans for their actions and let them take responsibility for what they did. They were wrong for storming the field and everyone knows it. I only wish that the police could have done more to protect the players and coaching staff. Poor Skip nearly got trampled while doing an interview. The crowd was electrifying all night during the game, but the fans that jumped walls and fences to get onto the field not only got what they deserved form the police, but THEY have left the black eye on the university. It’s time to grow up kids! Maybe the students will boycott the next home game. That means less drunks will be at the game and it can be a little more child friendly. Instead of the vulgar bilgerants that are currently going to the games. And I did attend game

Posted by: jackson Location: kinston on Sep 8, 2008 at 11:51 AM
to unk maybe you should drink more and you would not smell others beer and liquor Again,I agree with some others here Who is carolina why would we rush the field when was last time they won a championship (1980 ACC). West Va. Nationally ranked and Big East Champs 1993,2003,2004,2005, and 2007. It was a big deal. Holland is doing a lot of good things for East Carolina, but he needs to let the fans be fans. We do not want a wine (whine) and chees crowd like at UNC!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 8, 2008 at 11:11 AM
Terry Holland...... The next "YES" man for ECU!!!!

Posted by: unk on Sep 8, 2008 at 10:52 AM
I support Mr. Holland. He is trying to bring this school out of the Dark Ages. I don't go to ECU games anymore, because when I leave I smell of someone else's beer and liquor. The crowd is very unruly. I guess this is what happens when you take God out of the schools, and teach the kids they are decended from apes. Some have to prove it!!

ECU football still has a long way to go to prove itself worthy.

I'm getting tired of everyone saying (on different news artciles) that all ECU students get drunk and act stupid. I go to ECU and deicate myself to my studies and work my hardest. It is ridiculous that people are making assumptions about the student body. I'm sorry the students have pride in their school and team. I know the older population that is judging us have done stupid things in the past and you wouldnt want to be judged. We beat the #8 team in the nation when just 4 years ago we could barely win a game. Its something to get excited about and celebrate (even if that means rushing the field). All I know now is that it will be dealt with and we need to move on. Lets support the team!!!!

Posted by: Tommy Location: Hodges on Sep 8, 2008 at 10:07 AM
It looks like to me that, ECU is going to have to put up barariers to keep fans off the field. It is so unforunate what happened saturday after the game. The officers should have help create an orderly flow. They knew that this type of exparession of celebration was going to happen.

Posted by: ECU Parent Location: Greenville on Sep 8, 2008 at 10:05 AM
How do you compare a win against West Virginia and a win against Carolina? That is just crazy. I was at the game and I think the kids were just being kids. ECU officials knew if ECU won it would be a big deal. The cops were on a power trip and I think the video's prove it! GO PIRATES! Who would blame the students if they were to boycott the next game...

Posted by: Officer Location: Pitt on Sep 8, 2008 at 09:57 AM
Mr. Director, the fine officers were only doing there jobs out on the field. Infact doing what they were told. So no take your over-reacting statement and stuff it. Maybe you should stop asking for real Police assistance.

Sheila your comment hit the nail on the head! EXCELLENT!

Posted by: Kim Location: Greenville on Sep 8, 2008 at 09:31 AM
Were all of you that are posting these comments at the game Saturday? If not, why are you even commenting? The atmosphere at this game was electrifying, none of the fans wanted to ruin that. There were a lot of fans on the field, but my goodness, we just beat a nationally ranked team, at ECU! How many times in a life time does that happen? I have had season tickets for 26 years years, and I can tell you first hand, not many. Also, alot of the people on the field, were not DRUNK. Just because fans are proud of their team and want to celebrate with them, does not mean that they are drunk. Get with it out there.

Posted by: niceguy3 Location: Greenville on Sep 8, 2008 at 09:03 AM
DL- Perhaps you'd like to get rid of Terry Holland and go back to the "glory years" of Mike Hamrick, the worst thing to happen to ECU Athletics. Holland is doing a great job... let him do it. The reason nobody went into the stands when we beat UNC last year was because we were supposed to beat them. We didn't play well and we still one. On Saturday we played as near perfect football as anyone has seen from our Pirates. Let's enjoy this and let the team focus on their job at hand - beating Tulane on Saturday. Go Pirate. Go Terry Holland. Go home DL.

Posted by: Pirate Location: Greenville on Sep 8, 2008 at 09:00 AM
I agree with the above statements to a point. In saying this, I would like to commend the ECU police officers on their behavior during the post game incident. However, to the members of the Highway patrol I'd like to say..."Shame on you"! I saw officers punch, forearm to the face, kick students, and stand on their necks and extremeties with thier boots. All while watcher countless others run past them. Why did they pick the ones they did? I will say this, if one of the students was my kid; I'd first have a discussion with my kid about storming the field. However, if the officer that belted my 17 or 18 year old in the mouth with his fist was identified, I'd have a discussion with him as well. I'd also like to see if he could "manhandle" me as well as he did my kid. Every one of the officers that participated in the violence should be suspended. The storming was from what I saw peaceful with the exception of the actions of these officers.

Leave it to Holland to act like the stateman he is. He is simply a great asset to ECU, we need more people like him. Question: If a student who was asked not to go on the field gets into a fight with a sworn law enforcement officer, who wins? Next time you are stopped by the highway patrol try beating up the officer.

Posted by: sheila on Sep 8, 2008 at 08:42 AM
it is a pity that schools at ECU's level of education are not able to generate this type of dedication to academics rather than to football and drinking.

Posted by: DL Location: Greenville on Sep 8, 2008 at 08:38 AM
Holland can't issue a statement without referencing the ACC, can he? It would be nice if our AD would show support to the people who pay his salary. How can he compare fan response after the trouncing of #8 West Virginia to fan response after beating Carolina last year? ECU obviously expected fans to rush the field or law enforcement wouldn't have been given directives to expect it. How dare Holland chastise fans for attempting to show support to the team we love. Holland obviously doesn't bleed purple and gold. And seriously, what do you think the team enjoys more? Singing the fight song or seeing hundreds of supportive fans celebrating on the field. Holtz seemed to approve.

Posted by: Jackson Location: Kinston on Sep 8, 2008 at 08:28 AM
I think the police really were over the top on this. In the past students including myself have been on the field during a big back when beat Pitt and the Peach Bowl Win. It is part of college football basketball etc. If the officers were told to let the fans go by as stated by the atheletic dept. The officers should be punished. I saw a 150 lb kid getting pounded at least 8 times by the at least 200lb sheriff's deputy while 100's ran by them on the back. Stupid on the officer's part. I the athletic director is way offbase as usual. Some things he does very well other things I do not understand him.

I was at the game on Saturday night and I stayed in the stands after the game was over. It was announced SEVERAL times before the game was over, "for the safety of the players and coaches, please STAY OFF of the field at the conclusion of the game." I thought that police and security were just doing their job and what they were paid to do which was to protect those on the field from possible drunk or dangerous individuals. The fans were on the field before West Virginia had even made it to the locker room. I only with the security and police would have done more to prevent the fans from storming the field. Those who are shown being punched repeatedly, if they wouldn’t have stormed the field it never would have taken place. Secondly, if they would have stayed down and not tried to wrestle or fight with police I don’t think it would have happened either. I see it as enter at your own risk and if you went onto the playing field at anytime before or after the game you got what you deserved!
