GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- Skip Holtz followed his biggest coaching victory at East Carolina with an even more impressive one. Jonathan Williams had two short touchdown runs, quarterback Patrick Pinkney was nearly perfect and the Pirates routed No. 8 West Virginia 24-3 on Saturday for their third straight win over a ranked team.

Pinkney was 22-of-28 for 236 yards with a touchdown for East Carolina (2-0), which opened the season with a last-minute upset of then-No. 17 Virginia Tech.

This one was decided much earlier. The Pirates never trailed, kept Pat White in check, outgained West Virginia 386-251 and were in control from start to finish.

They cruised to their first upset of a top-10 team since the Steve Logan-led team stunned then-No. 9 Miami 27-23 on Sept. 23, 1999, in a game played 90 miles west in Raleigh because of Hurricane Floyd-related damage.

These Pirates may have done something even more remarkable - they followed last season's Hawaii Bowl victory over then-No. 22 Boise State by taking care of the two toughest teams on this year's schedule. Those wins could propel them back into the Top 25 for the first time since '99 while keeping them in the conversation for an at-large BCS berth.

White rushed for 97 yards on 20 carries and finished 11-of-18 for 72 yards for the Mountaineers (1-1), who for the second time in four games as a top-10 team were stunned by an unranked team dating back to a loss to Pittsburgh last December that kept them out of the national championship game.

Pat McAfee kicked a 26-yard field goal midway through the second quarter for West Virginia's only points. The Mountaineers were held without a touchdown for the first time since a 45-3 loss at Miami in 2001.

East Carolina entered just 2-17 against West Virginia with seven straight losses in the series, but claimed a surprisingly easy victory by keeping the ball away from WVU's high-powered offense and wearing down an inexperienced defense.

The Pirates had three scoring drives of 11 or more plays and went longer than six minutes, and Williams capped two of them with scoring runs of 5 and 1 yards. His second score came on East Carolina's first possession of the second half, closed a 12-play drive that included three third-down conversions and sent the crowd into delirium.

Williams, one of the committee of running backs Holtz is counting on to replace Tennessee Titans first-round draft pick Chris Johnson, led East Carolina with 69 yards on 17 carries.

He started the scoring with a 5-yard run that capped the Pirates' 11-play opening drive and came two plays after Pinkney's 35-yard completion to Jamar Bryant on third-and-9.

Ben Ryan added a 42-yard field goal midway through the second to make it 10-0, and the Pirates pushed their lead to 14 by turning West Virginia's second turnover into a touchdown. Marcus Hands recovered Jock Sanders' fumble at the Mountaineers' 35, and four plays later Pinkney's lofted a 13-yard pass to Taylor over cornerback Brandon Hogan to make it 17-3 with 47 seconds before halftime.

Dirk, Were you inferring...its not like its a real job anyway. If that be the case then what does that make your position? In most situations, that means you'd be just 1 step above his position. So I quess it dosen't take much of a job to supervise someone who has a "its not a real job". Want to apologize now?

GO ECU ! I agree, we should not let negative events overshadow this seasons sucess, 1 game at a time but its hard not to be happy when I went to school there we didnt win more than twice in a season!! I think it was like 3 wins in two seasons. I BELIEVE!!!

While whatching Fox news on Sunday, I heard them say that the only college game worth reporting on was the ECU upset over WVU! How good that sounded. Thanks to Fox for not mentioning what happened when the students stromed the field. Let ECU have their moment in the sun. Now, lets beat Tulane and show all the doubters what the Pirates are made of!

Robin-Have you ever even watched a major college ballgame and seen an upset. This is what the winning student body does...they celebrate and act like fools on national tv. It happens every weekend and hopefully, our kids will continue to be seen at their "finest" next week. Go PIRATES!!

Anyone notice that event staff were removing sponsorship signage from the endzones with five minutes left in the game? ECU knew fans would storm the field and should have been better prepared for it. I can understand the need in protecting the goalposts and WVU's team and staff. Law enforcement should have concentrated security efforts on them, not sucker punching fans who hadn't even crossed the fence yet. I saw a trooper grab a kid around the neck and pull him over the fence to the ground. Makes a lot of sense since their presence was to prevent people from coming on the field, not dragging them onto it. Pirate Nation deserved to celebrate on the field. Thank God it wasn't ECU campus police who made fools of themselves on national television.

CFB, I see where you are coming from, but you are making the same old mistake of thinking that all of those on the field were students. Some obviously were, but probably the majority were not. I remember the NCSU/ECU game when the fans rushed the field, tore down the goal posts and seriously injured an nonsworn officer working with the NCSU Campus Police. NCSU refused to play ECU for several years afterward, mainly because of the assault on the security officer. The ECU/NCSU policed jointly investigated the assault and identified/charged the offender. Guess what? He wasn't an ECU student. He was a Wake Tech. student. After all the finger pointing and NSCU's Athletic Dept. refusing to play ECU, it turn out that the offender had never ever attended ECU. Yes, some students act like idiots, but believe me, most of them act more responsibly than some of the adults I've dealt with at football games. Plus they don't try to throw their weight around like "Disgruntled Pirate Club Member

Search you tube for this video 2008 ECU vs WVU Students Rush the Field, about 32 secs in a cop rushes the crowd and punches a fan tell me what that person could have done to the cop from 20 25 ft away??? and I am not ashamed of the crowd how is rushing the field to celebrate the victory bad??? I didnt see one thing that was out of hand except the cops reactions I have seen plenty of events where the fans stormed the field or court and nobody says a thing If I was there I would have been right with them. How does at worst, trespassing warrant a beat down???

The kids that got detained jumped the fence before the game was over. The cops were cool with my group and told us to not touch the goal posts but they would not stop us from running on the field, but to make sure the game was over first. Those kids that got jacked by the cops jumped before the game was totally over and started giving the cops crap. In a surprise it was GPD doing any of the beating, it was whoever was in the brown and the others in the gray shirts. Anyway he shoulda listened to them when they said wait till its over.

I saw the coach being interviewed by a lady reporter, and a NC State Highway patrol trooper trying to maintain the crowd behind the interview...he had his hands full with the wild crowd that knocked him into the reporter and coach! What a pity folks across America got to see ECU's "finest" at their finest on tv. What they did tarnished the football team's efforts and victory. I'm PROUD of that ECU football team and ashamed of the crowd's actions after the game!

SBK I agree with your last posting and to add to that I made my way through the police baracade one time with my car I wont explain how, but they thought I was with the athletic department( I did nothing on purpose to mislead them).I saw a section of at least 15 empty spots that were roped off RIGHT IN FRONT OF A GATE and this was mins before the game. The sign on these spots said VIP chancellors guest parking only, So I parked my POS car right there and luckly didnt get towed but I should have that right with a VALID parking sticker for that lot. And by the way dont blame the university the cops were instructed not to use force and to let them storm the field if it was a large group that tried.

Who is this SBK. Did you have a child with you at the game? A child that asks why is the police officer BEATING on the student. Are you saying this is ok in any form? Please display your name becouse I want to make sure that I never have any contact with you whatsoever. Stop taking the side of the law enforcement. Not all of the law enforcement officers did this action. One or two officers assaulted these victims. THAT DOES NOT MEAN ALL OF OUR OFFICERS ARE CORRUPT. That means the one officer needs to be dealt with Promptly. Becouse he gives the rest of law enforcement a bad name. Do you have any idea what would happen if he did this on TOBACCO RD in Greenville. After the people beat him, then the NAACP and Church of Phillippi would sue him. AM I WRONG? NO. This officer, whether he was pushed from behind, or whether a kid tryed to run out on the field, has NO absolutely NO RIGHT to beat on this Student. How would you like for me to BEAT on your child while their on ground

All of a sudden the ECU students are the sanctimonious little souls. If you believe that you believe the moon is square. Through out the years I have seen ECU students kicking shopping carts at Walmart when it was first opened to blatantly emptying ash trays and throwing trash outside of convenient stores. Yeah, they are the perfectly behaved ECU children. They sure act like they attend a low(206) academically ranked institution. Yeah, that is some institution. The same ones that are crying foul have all of a sudden become severely amnesic. A few years ago when the game against NC State was suspended for quite a while. I honestly how many years but it was as a result of the nicely "behaved" ECU students. Regarding the alleged police brutality I saw on TV the struggle that the NCHP Sgt had trying to keep disruptive ECU students. The NCHP Sgt's job was to protect/escort Skip Holtz while he was interviewed. Another LEO with a black uniform had the same struggle alongside the NCHP Sgt

I hope that a news story is done on the police beating at the game or at least some kind of attention is done. Anyone watching the end of the game on ESPN could clearly see a student on the ground with several police on top of him and still he was punched 3 times. I don't think that a student being held down by several cops poses enough threat that he needs to be punched 3 times. I was at the game and was shocked by the police. hundreds of students were on that field and random students were grabbed and then beaten. I hope enough attention is made that causes some kind of investigation. Some kind of statement needs to be made by some kind of officials. On a different note, ECU played their hardest. I was at the game and there was not a dull moment. you could almost say ECU played perfect. Skip has done a great job as a coach and the team is playing hard and showing what they can do. I hope we go all the way this year. GO PIRATES ARRRRGGGGHHHHH

I’m a pirate fan and have been attending the games for over 20 years with my family. We love attending the games, but over the last couple of years we have been harassed by the occupants in the seats behind us. They too are Pirate Fans. It all started when my husband asked one of them (we’ll call him Bubba) to please have a little respect for his children (6 and 9) by not yelling the f-bomb right in their ears. Doesn’t every descent human being know that’s just not acceptable? Bubba’s girlfriend had to sass back and say “maybe you shouldn’t bring your children to the games.” How insane is that? If everyone with children did this, think about all the money that would be lost on snacks and ticket sells alone. And after all, who says kids shouldn’t go to the games, there is a Kids Pirate Club you know. They know how to act and it’s just ashamed that grown folks don’t. At the end of that game Bubba pushed my husband to get his attention and said “you better treat me with some respect durin Bubba also pours his sodas partially out, right behind us so he can add his alcohol to them. It runs down on our stuff and makes for a complete mess. If he had any manners, he’d pour his drink out downstairs before he came upstairs. Yesterday, finally after being soaked for the second time, my mother turned around and said “I wish you wouldn’t do that”. Once again we had to hear their “lip”. The sad thing is that this guy attends the games with his girlfriend, his mother, and his father. He’s probably late 20’s or maybe even in his 30’s…how his mom can sit there with him and condone this behavior I’ll never know. The saddest part of the whole story is that his mother is a teacher’s assistant at my son’s school. What a great example she and her son are setting.

The truth is that the students are the least of the problem. Most of the students sit in the center section of the North stands and probably no more than 25% of the attendees are ECU students. Yes, they drink and party, but they rarely fight, argue with police or create major problems. Most of the really obnoxious behavior comes from nonstudents and, all to often, pirate club members. The football program should be for the students first, but they aren't even allowed to park in the parking lots that they paid for with their parking permit fees. The person that was arrested by the officer may or may not have been a student and it really doesn't matter. If you want to let the fans take the field, then THAT'S what you should call Holland or Ballard about. Putting cops out to secure the field and then pulling the rug out from under them needs to stop. Either give up the field or support the cops. Or maybe just give the cops the day off for the next game?

Why doesn't law enforcement do this to those who are robbing banks, restaurants and convenience stores here in Greenville; that would mean they would have to catch them first? Aside from watching the game on espn and viewing the YouTube video, I have not seen anymore of the event. This was ill preparation on the Universities part and those cops should be punished if they used excessive force. Considering we got an email last year after one home game for our fan"s mouth, I believe the student body diserves an explanation and investigation into this matter. I also am sort of puzzled about why the news media has been hush hush about this thus far. These are the same stations that broke into programming for several hours to cover a 50mph tropical storm as it moved thru the area. The win this weekend is the big event! However, it sucks this has mucked it a little, that is why the school needs to resolve it and the media should cover it, as many are concerned. ECU-->GO PIRATES<--ECU

is it possible that this student did more than rush the field? i think you need step back and looke at the entire picture..you mention speeding trespassing and possible damage to property..those my friend are crimes also! and you said it your self breaking the law may possible cause a officer to use force not a beat down.. is this a big deal to you because it is a ecu student and not some "well known" thug. breaking the law and resisting a public officer shouldn't be ok if you are a ECU student trying to have a good time.

To anyone defending that cop!! Next time u speed or cut across someone's lawn or turn around in someones driveway, dont be surprised if the cop performs illegal searches or beats u down because u are breaking the law. But as a former athlete it makes the fb players feel good to see the fans get excited over a win and I promise the fans support makes a differnce. The only thing this cop can do is hurt the team if fans stop getting excite or even wanting to go to the games the program will be what would suffer the most. Not to mention the cops will miss out on a gig.

Isn't it strange how there is no media coverage on the cops actions we wouldnt want to give a crooked police force a bad name. As long as the media finds it ok to ignore this the opinon of the few doesnt matter. It is the students and fans that make it possible to have this team and a opportunity to play. The police need to start treating the student body and the public with respect. With the goal post down where is the threat? That used to be the excuse we couldnt charge the field. Now what is it?

Short of him attacking a police officer with a weapon of some sort I cant even begin to think that he deserved a beat down and point blank the cop had him on the ground and surrounded. If that would have been my friend that cop would have had his hand full,, he would have been surrounded and on the ground and but if that happens they would be shooting the other person because we all know cops can break the law if they want to and we have to take it no matter how unjust!

I hope the officer who was caught beating that pirate fan on ESPN television after the game is stripped of his badge. That is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever seen in my life. True, I don't know the whole story but I highly doubt he was a big enough threat to be severely beating that kid. It was just college students being college students trying to celebrate with their peers. Even though I watched the game from WV I had friends at the game who told me what these officers were doing to the students. Oh and SBK I read your statement and I don't care who you are there college kids celebrating and don't deserved to be treated like a thug. Good job to the pirates but we are coming ready for you next year

the only thing i saw on the video is a law enforcement officers attempting to take a guy into custody..you see him use trained strikes to the guys leg! no where else.. just because you are a drunken college kid celebrating doesn't mean you are allowed to break the law...did you stop to think what happend before they 3 sec clip of the officers..l

The cop had his back to the gate. When the gate was rushed he was trampled to the ground. After returning to his feet, he then GRABBED the next student running by him and BODY SLAMMED the student to the ground. After which, the cop and several others pounced upon the student with their batons and where beating him relentlessly. I think the school officials should have never ask the students not to rush the field. This was the biggest game that some of these students and fans have ever attended. Surely the administration had an idea the the field would be rushed, so why try to stop it. I also believe the the officers involved should be reprimanded and banned from serving at future games. As for the students who where beat relentlessly, I can only hope that they sustained no injuries and next time they will rush the field in an area where Barney Fife is not waiting to GRAB them.

To RETIRED ECU COP, I would like for you to know I never drank 1 beer the entire game nor before the game. But a child next to me asked why was the policeman was beating up the kid. I TOLD HIM TO LOOK AT THE OTHER FANS. If you are retired, God bless us. Becouse its a shame you feel this way. I am for strict punishment but im for it with actual criminals. Remember the ones that actually rob stores and inflict serious injury on common citizens. But im sure thats why our crime rate is up so high becouse you guys spend your time bullying students becouse your too AFRAID to bully the four gangs in Greenville. GOOD JOB PS. You disprove one of their idiotic claims and they immediately come up with another one(NO FACTS or PROOF required)that has nothing to do with the subject at hand. BIG Congrats Pirates! You painted it purple again! As far as the fan celebration, on the field, after the game: I watched the game at home, on TV. The coach was interviewed immediately afterwards & the reporter mentioned the fans on the field. The coach very clearly responded that HE WANTED THEM out there celebrating! He was all for it. If police were guilty of beating fans on the field, I hope it was for something threatening, and not merely for being out there. Go Pirates!!!!!!!!! I'm ready to see you stomp the Pack now! :)

William&Co.: Those athletes reflect where they go to school, ECU. Back in 1989 I went to HS graduation in Jacksonville, NC. I heard a young lady stating that anybody can go to ECU. Check this link that seems to reinforce her point: http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/college/national-counselor-rank ECU is ranked number 206 in the nation with a 3.3(of 5.0) college counselor score. Contrast that to the University of Southern California(USC) who has the #1 ranked CFB team. USC is ranked #26 academically according to the afore mentioned link with 4.4 college counselor score. About ten days ago USC QB Mark Sánchez was interviewed by ESPN George Saunders. Mark Sánchez was very articulate. His answers were clear and characterized by proper sentence construction and proper verb conjugation. BTW Mark Sánchez has a 3.5 GPA. Needless to mention he spoke like a CFB QB should. Thank you

Hey, I'm a Pirate fan all the way. All i know is, public speaking may be tough, but seems like our football team is worse at it than any other college, pro, or other high school athlete that is ever interviewed on any television/radio broadcast. Plus Mr. William, we learn subject verb agreement at a very young age. I can see it now, "Both football teams was ready dis evening."

Jon Williams is a good kid - as a teacher at JH Rose, I should know. Giving an interview in any way does not speak for your intelligence - public speaking is more difficult than you may think - try it sometime before you judge someone's intelligence just on the way they may talk. Good job, Jon and ECU! Arggggh!

According to a friend who is a cop. They were told before the game to stop individuals from coming onto the field without excessive force. Now they said if a large majority rushed the field they were to let the fans come on the field and go protect the teams/stadium/field goals. Also according to him Greenville police were in the black uniforms and Kinston police in the brown. I could see a kid getting beat with a knifestick from my seat by a brown uniformed cop. No matter what city they are from it was uncalled for and an investigation should be launched.

To Disgruntled Pirate Club Member. I bet I threw you out of a game or two before I retired from ECUPD. Give me the students anytime over the arrogant drunk Pirate Club members. I've got a news flash for you, you are no more important than any other fan at that stadium. Your money may buy you a parking space and a special seat, but it doesn't impress me or any other cop that work the games. I dealt with your type for years and that typical arrogant pirate club attitude still turns my stomach. Those cops work 12 hours on their feet trying to keep jerks like you safe from each other and yourselves while you drink your smuggled liquor and make fools of yourselves. I used to love dragging out PCM while they screamed, "you don't know who I AM" and "I'm calling the CHANCELLOR!" Well I never did get fired. As a matter of fact the more arrogant the PCM the funnier it was. Go ahead and call Terry Holland, the cops don't work for him anyway. Go sober up and iron your little pirate flag

If you had disciplined your child growing up, you wouldn't have to worry if your child was getting disciplined by the Police. He would act as if he had some sense and go towards the parking lot after a game and leave.

Awesome win today! However, I have to agree with Sickened Pirate on the abusive force that several officers displayed while subdueing fans rushing the field. I dont necessarily agree with rushing the field, but these fans were not armed and posed no threat to the officers that required the brutal force that was witnessed! It was a sad display to such a great day. If you missed it at the game, check it out on ESPN at the end of Holtz's post game interview. Something should be done!

If the Police Officers are telling students not to enter the stadium and they do....that is resist delay and obstruct. What do you want them to do? Sit their and let the students act like idiots? Just for your info, when people raid stadiums like I'm sure they did, chances are someone will get hurt. Reality check, they are their for everyone's safety.

The officer was white, a bit heavy, and looks like he has no hair on top of his head in his forties. He was wearing the light brown uniform which tells me he may have been an Pitt County Sheriff. I plan on writing Terry Holland on this matter, I fully understand that security wanted to prevent students and fans from rushing the field but going to the level of actually "BEATING" on a fan when they were down is too FAR. I am ashamed to know that some in our law enforcement abuse their limits. Shame on you sir, but ESPN has you on tape, so you can probably kiss your job goodbye. I would not want any law enforcement officer taking swings at my child while they are lieing on the ground just becouse he rushes the field with 200 other fans.

To Sickened Pirate: I was at the game as well. Whether your a college kid or a grown man you should have enough sense not to jump over fences and run onto the field. The East Carolina Football Team has learned to win with class I just wish some of the Pirate Fans would show some class. I'm a disapointed/embarassed Pirate Fan. If we want to be a BIG TIME Program let's start acting like it!

GREAT WIN BUT when I got home I had taped the game as well. At the end of Skip Holtz's interview, you can see an older white officer BEATING on a student for entering the stadium as 100 more students did. SOMEONE NEEDS TO REVIEW THIS TAPE, its at the end of the game on ESPN. Im sure im not the only one that has seen it. Its sad with the violence we have in the WalMart parking lots and memorial Dr, that SOME officers pick on citizens who are enjoying themselves without hurting others. When you beat a top 10 team, its common sense that the fans will rush the field. But beating on the fans and locking some up doesnt prove a point. Who is the lady who watched this in the purple shirt, please speak up becouse this shouldnt be tolerated. THIS OFFICER's face is seen clearly on the video. Can we say Police brutality?

Go pirates!!!!WV never had a chance... I hope the police learn how to deal with the public before the next big game... its sad to see a celebration that ends up with police slamming kids on the ground and one ECU athletic person kicking a kid to the ground and continuing to kick him while he's on the ground.... its sad to see that and I hope that ECU as a whole will try to figure this all out.
