The mothers of two college students who died in fires in North Carolina are traveling to Washington with students to advocate for campus fire safety.

The trip comes nearly a year after seven South Carolina college
students died in a beach house fire during a weekend trip to Ocean
Isle Beach, N.C. The mother of one victim, 18-year-old Lauren Mahon, organized the trip for about 30 University of South Carolina students.

Kaaren Mann said she was elated by the response.

The students will leave Sunday and meet up with about 30 students from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Tuesday.

Bonnie Woodruff will accompany the North Carolina students. Her son, Ben, died in a fire in his Chapel Hill fraternity house on Mother's Day 1996.

I am sorry these kids died, but the real reason was that they were drunk. The parents should have taught the kids not to drink, smoke or do drugs. They were too wasted to even know they were burning up. It is not the responsibility of colleges, it is the responsibility of parents to teach their own kids what is acceptable and what is not. If we take more time raising our own kids and not trying to blame someone else, we would all be better off. I'll bet all these kids were raised in homes where drinking and partying is the norm. Monkey see - monkey do!

Why are these moms rallying for campus fire saftey? Their kids died in a beach house off campus grounds.
