Hundreds of people left their homes Friday evening as Tropical Storm Hanna approached the Carolina coast.
In Onslow County, 159 people utilized their shelters, 24 of them at the White Oak shelter.
In Craven County emergency workers say less than 50 people showed up.
The Pitt County shelters were used by 18 people.
A handful of people checked into the Newport and Atlantic Beach shelters in Carteret County.
Below is a list of shelters. We will update as new information becomes available.
BEAUFORT COUNTY:
Northside High School, opens at 6 p.m. Friday.
CARTERET COUNTY:
Atlantic Elementary School
Newport Middle School (pets okay)
Both shelters open at 4 p.m. Friday. People should bring food, bedding and medication.
CHERRY POINT
Cherry Point will open a shelter a 6 p.m. Friday at the Cherry Tree House, located on 4th Avenue next to the Family Service Center.
CRAVEN COUNTY
Havelock High School, 101 Webb Blvd., Havelock
Brinson Elementary School, 319 Neuse Forest Ave., New Bern
Farm Life Elementary School, 2000 Farmlife Ave., Vanceboro
Ben Quinn Elementary School, 4275 Martin Luther King Blvd., New Bern
All shelters open at 6:00 p.m. Friday.
JONES COUNTY:
Jones County Civic Center on Highway 58 opens at 6 p.m.
LENOIR COUNTY:
Lenoir Community College 7:00 pm Friday.
MARTIN COUNTY
The shelter at Williamston High School on Godwin Drive will open at 7 p.m. on Friday. Those needing shelter are responsible for their own dinner, blankets, chairs or cots and other personal items including medications.
NASH COUNTY
Shelters at Winstead Avenue Elementary, 991 S. Winstead Ave., Rocky Mount and Southern Nash High School, 6446 Southern Nash High Rd., Bailey will open at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
ONSLOW COUNTY:
The Onslow County Chapter of the American Red Cross has activated its Disaster Ready Team in preparation for the impact of Hanna. Your Red Cross is on alert to respond and provide emergency services that may include mass care, family assistance, and disaster health services, among others to meet the disaster-related needs of victims.
The Red Cross will open six (6) shelters in Onslow County at 1:00 pm on Friday, September 5, 2008 to provide safe shelter for individuals and families evacuated from risk-prone areas in the path of Hanna.
The shelters will be located at:
Dixon Middle School
Swansboro High School
Richlands High School
Southwest Middle School
Jacksonville Commons Middle School
White Oak High School
The only shelter that accepts animals is the Jacksonville Commons Middle School. The site is a co-located human and pet shelter. Pets must be in carriers, with current vaccinations, and accompanied by their owners.
PAMLICO COUNTY:
Pamlico Community College 4 p.m. Friday
PASQUOTANK COUNTY
A Red Cross shelter will open on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Knobbs Creek Recreation Center on Ward Street in Elizabeth City.
PITT COUNTY
Wellcome Middle (3101 N. Memorial Dr.)
D.H. Conley High (2006 Worthington Road)
Farmville Central High (3308 East Wilson Street, Farmville)
All shelters open at 6:00 p.m. Citizens need to bring bedding, food and supplies with them to the shelters.
