A man who was employed by the Williamston Police Department is now accused of being on the other side of the law.

Records Clerk and Crimestoppers Coordinator Terry Holliday has been arrested and charged with embezzlement. Williamston Police Captain Travis Cowan says the arrest happened August 29th.

Captain Cowan says Holliday allegedly stole one thousand dollars while he was a treasurer for the Williamston Lions Club. Right now, Holliday's been charged with one count of embezzlement, but the district attorney's office is investigating the case to see if any other charges will be added.

Holliday resigned from the police department on August 25th.
He was released on bond and has his first court appearance today, he'll be back in court on September 10th.

Pretty sure if anyone wants to know what happened you cannot contact the Enterprise or better known as the "NATIONAL ENQUIER" of Martin County and Williamston! Why don't you people just let it rest don't you have a life? Get on with your lives I am pretty sure he and his family have unless, you are a person or persons who like to thrive off other peoples mistakes they have made. You gotta be from Martin County!

why won't WITN give an update? This sounds more like gossip rather than reporting. Genuine reporting would update on the court appearance and what was decided.

EDITOR'S NOTE: We update major stories periodically through the process, while others we will update at their conclusion. As far as we know, there is nothing new on this story yet. The court process can be a very slow one.

Hey Blue Line: Why did you leavr the WPD?

I think it's funny how you (WITN) will print certain comments. B/c I, (along with two of my coworkers), have written more than a handful of comments on here for various stories and we have yet to see ONE of them up here. EDITOR'S NOTE: Comments that do not follow the guidelines will not be allowed.

Hey Anonymous, I am not going to stand by anyone who intentionally commits a felony regardless who you are!!! I have received so many calls from people asking "whats up with the crooked cop"? The public saw him as an Officer, and he made the Officers look bad even though he was a clerk. I am not perfect by no means, but I have never stole money or caused shame to my fellow Officers. I work two jobs and if I cant afford something, I wait until I can. If he had money problems, then he should've asked for help. Bye the way, you dont know anything about me, so you have no right to judge. Since you seem to have so much sympathy for Terry, why dont you ask him why did he take the money!!

To WITN Staff: Where is the follow-up on this story? Did anyone cover it?

EDITOR'S NOTE: If you know of a story suggestion, please send it to desk@witn.com. We covered the initial arrest and will continue to follow the case through the courts, but if you know of something that has developed please let us know.

All of this bickering back and forth isn't helping anyone, and it certainly isn't helping the reputation of our city/county. We all know that the media in Williamston is biased and those in charge of the local newspaper have no business holding that position. We also know that our politicians are not the best in the world. The only way to make a difference is to get involved and vote. That is your American right. Mr. Holliday and his family desrve the same right of "innocent until proven guilty", but unfortunately, that will not happen in the court of public opinion. What we all need to do is simply pray for the entire family and the situations they are facing. Then, if you want to really make a change in the way things work, get involved, vote, take part in the community; but don't pin all your frustrations with the "establishment" on one man and the mistake that he made. Let the courts do their job, and we can do ours by voting in November. Only then can change happen.

Hey Buddy I did Leave! Left a long time ago. Wish alot more people would leave from there! Williamston esp. would be a great place to live if it wasn't so much of the BS everybody has to go through there like the crooked Politics! But everywhere you go in Williamston, somebody is always talking bout you! Heck if you fart, your neighbors going no about it before the smell hits you!

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 6, 2008 at 05:04 AM
Wht don't you people that dislike MC so much leave? Nobody will even care. If you are not willing to leave, then stop whining.

Posted by: JJ Location: NC on Sep 5, 2008 at 11:13 PM
I worked with Terry for about 13 years at WPD. He was a good co-worker and I still consider him a good friend. I hate what he did, and he knows all to well that he has to face the consquences. Seems he already is facing them in the public opinion comments. I still consider him a friend and wish him the best.

Posted by: Martin County on Sep 5, 2008 at 11:02 PM
"The Enterprise" prints only 1 side, (her side)There is so much wrong with MC and a lot of it starts with our County Officials. There is a lot of news out there and this "Mr. Holliday" should not have been blasted all over the news and his pic. blasted in the paper. I am sure that there has been a lot of crooked deals made here in MC. Just recently the Board of Education, The County Commissioners, The Tax office, should I go on? If he did this, let him have his day in court and he will receive his punishment. The is NO need of punishing his entire family and friends. I have a couple of questions,,WHO called witn? and the newspaper? and WHY did the lions club have to pay him the money back? was he trying to make restitution?I am sure all the facts are not out yet, please remember "stealing is wrong but we all are human and we do make mistakes. There is a problem in Williamston with politics..if you are not with the "ELITE" crowed..well, you probably know where that leaves you!

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 5, 2008 at 10:27 PM
Hey Blue line, have you heard Terry say it was a MISTAKE????? I do not think so! Yes he was given that award! Did you support him when he recieved it? Nobodys perfect and i bet you are not as well! But you probably think you are. I am glad you serve and protect but I would not expect your type of comment! You as a Public Servant should stick by your fellow workers or ex workers regardless if wrong or not! Just by working with him for 2 or more years does that make you think you everything behind whats going on here? Nobody knows but Terry. Heck if you worked with him why don't you get in touch with him and ask him why he did what he did and let us all know? Then lets see what you have to say.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 5, 2008 at 10:14 PM
Hey ??? if we as american citizens don't wake up and smell the coffee we all might as well be a third world country the way some of you people are acting on here. What country are you from? Let it rest! The truth will come out! And I bet all of you people who keep critizing Mr. Holliday are all going to be ashamed of yourselves! Then again I doubt it cause people like yourself just keep the SOS up. Don't no how to let it rest! Hopefully one day you do not have to go through what he is going through if so I hope and pray you can get through it!

Posted by: ??? Location: NC on Sep 5, 2008 at 09:45 PM
If he was in a third world country right now, his new name would be Lefty.WAKE UP AMERICA!

Bret - first of all, I am educated and on top of that I have common sense. I had enough sense to get out of Williamston when I could. I take it you have never lived there or know anything about the town. Just look at the majority of these post. Anyone who has lived in Williamston knows of some kind of corruption. This is the same case. So if you think I am so full of it, then go to the Williamston police department and get the truth. Don't judge especially if you don't know the facts. The fact is that the media is only reporting one side of the story and they don't care how damaging it may be. Do a little research...look at the local news stations and see how different each story is. One station is reporting that Terry is a police officer...not true. Everyone should be praying for Terry and his family rather than throwing stones. Put yourself in his shoes and think about how your family would feel if you did something like this or worse. No one is perfect!

Posted by: Blue line on Sep 5, 2008 at 05:44 PM
It's ashame that if a regular citizen stole money it is a crime, but if a so called well known citizen steals money it's a mistake. Terry did wrong and he needs to be punished for his actions, even if he did pay the money back.I worked with him for two and a half years, and I agree I would've never thought he would do this, but you never know. He was awarded Law Enforcement Officer of the year and he is not sworn, now thats a smack the face to every cop in Martin County. If it was me I would get bad comments, and I protect citizens everyday. Also to the people who thinks he is being framed, if that's the case why hasnt he denied it yet? I dont care if it was a penny if you take whats not yours, you need to be punished!!

Posted by: bret on Sep 5, 2008 at 04:32 PM
Stealing is stealing. Whether you pay it back or not you still stole it. I guess I should say borrowing without permission is stealing in this case.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 5, 2008 at 03:13 PM
Nobody said it was a mistake! He did what he did he paid it back and the Lions club in return had to give him money back! So yes everybody makes mistakes.

Lets let the situation here with Terry rest. Why don't we as citizens of Martin County stand up for what is right and hold a forum and get all of these crooked politicians to tell us tax paying citizens why they always want to try and cover up some of the things that have happened in the past that was never put in the Enterprise or reported to the news media. Why don't these so called people who are suppose to be working for us in the community quit taking care of all of there "rich buddies" when they make mistakes or do wrong. I am tired of this mess it has gone on to long in Martin County and its time for the truth to come out. Some of you citizens want to be hard on Terry but there is alot of you who support him just as I do! I think the whole County needs a shake up from the commisioners to the sheriffs dept. Lets all stand together and shake it up! And lets not forget the PERSON who is in charge of the Enterprise she controls what goes in there shes no "SAINT"!

Posted by: citizen Location: martin co on Sep 5, 2008 at 01:03 PM
Taking money that does not belong to you is NOT a 'mistake'. The fact that he paid it back or had intentions to pay it back do not make it any less wrong. Maybe I'll go rob a bank but if I get caught tell the police I was going to pay it back...think that'll make it ok?

Posted by: Anonymous Location: north carolina on Sep 5, 2008 at 12:22 PM
The enterprise is not the target here however the enterprise has caused another mess. Mess in that they only print news about certain people and other certain people who work for the law and get in trouble with the law never make the headlines. Yes I know for a fact an office for this county did wrong and you never saw his name in the paper at all. Yes, he was caught and things took place so the paper and news would never get their hands on the information. So why pick on one. If you are going to pick on one pick on all of them. Terry is the only one that can tell what actually happened. He and his family are already paying a price for the dirty politics in this county. Just pray for Terry and his wife.

Posted by: Michelle Location: Williamston on Sep 5, 2008 at 11:09 AM
Ever heard of CROOKED POLITICS? Well this is one of the cases here. The money was paid BACK to the lions club. CRIME STOPPERS has NOTHING to do with the case at all. This was added to make it more interesting. The news media has a way of doing things to get people talking. When the people of this LOVELY county find out that this man IS INNOCENT they'll have to find someone else to talk about. You can say / think what you want to, But I DON"T think any less of Terry for what happened. The Lord will judge him NOT YOU!!!

Posted by: whoever Location: none on Sep 5, 2008 at 10:50 AM
IT IS SO AMAZING HOW WHEN OTHERS DO WRONG, NO ONE POST ANY GOOD WORDS ABOUT THEM AT ALL..UNTIL THEY GET IN TROUBLE, DEEP TROUBLE, THEN ALL THE GOOD THEY HAVE DONE MEANS NOTHING NOW...THE ENTERPRISE IS NOT THE TARGET HERE....YES I DO FEEL SORRY ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED....BUT WE MUST REALIZE THAT IN A SMALL TOWN...ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN,. WITH NO JOBS HERE...AND NO MORE MONEY FOR PEOPLE...SOMETIMES PEOPLE HAVE FINANCIAL PROBLEMS, BUT BECAUSE OF THEIR POSITION IN SOCIETY ALL THESE YEARS AND GOOD WORK...PRIDE HAS A WAY OF MAKING YOU FALL...STILL PRAYING THAT THINGS ARE DIFFERENT AND THAT IT WILL WORK OUT

Editor's Note: Please type all posts in upper and lower cases so that they are easier to read.

Ok people no one knows the REAL story BUT Terry he is already paying the price for what it is that he has done before even going to court. People leaving rude comments about Terry give me a break grow up! Haven't you ever made a mistake in your life.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Williamston on Sep 5, 2008 at 10:35 AM
Look at who is running the paper & you will have your answer. SHE puts things in the paper that she wants to see in there & if SHE doesn't want it in there, it will not make the paper. I think there needs to be an investigation there also!!

Posted by: Angelia Location: Williamston on Sep 5, 2008 at 08:50 AM
Corrections for my last statement, I don't believe everything Lea said. I don't believe Terry stole any money, maybe made a mistake, we are not young chicks anymore and I have made mistakes on my job but not intentionally and we always found the mistakes. I think someone jumped the gun tooo dang quick accusing him of this mess!!! As far as needing any money, he has a good family who make good money themselves who would help him out and Terry don't have that kind of proud as to not ask for help and then steal!!!! Doesn't make any sense at all! I have worked with Terry around thousands of dollars back in our younger years and he never stole anything back then! And WHY DID THE PEOPLE OF MARTIN COUNTY PUT IT IN THE PAPER AND SUCH TO RUN HIS NAME THRU THE MUD UNLESS SOMEONE HAD SOMETHING AGAINST HIM AND HAD SOME PULL AT THAT PAPER! I CALLED THE PAPER WHEN ONE OF THEM OFFICERS WERE DOING WRONG AND THE DEPT. WAS COVERING IT UP AND THEY NEVER WROTE ONE WORD ABOUT HIM!!!!

Posted by: Angelia Location: Williamston on Sep 5, 2008 at 08:25 AM
Hey~! I am like Lea!!! If you don't live here, you don't have a clue how this town is run!!! So, Lea, you are so very right and Terry has been destroyed probably b/c of something he found out and was gonna tell it!!!!!

Edited

Posted by: bret on Sep 5, 2008 at 06:31 AM
Lea, if the money was returned, then why was he arrested? you are not very smart, are you? Or are you just defending a family member or something?

Posted by: Lea on Sep 4, 2008 at 09:34 PM
Terry hasn't gotten "paid." There again you don't know the entire story. If you would read a little further down you will notice that someone already stated that the money was paid back and then some. The Lion's Club had to pay Terry money back. There again, none of you know the facts. It is all Williamston politics. For those of you who have never lived there, then you wouldn't understand but for those of you who have and do, you all know that the politics of Williamston are corrupt. There have been major illegal activities throughout the city that never get reported by the news or the Enterprise. Yet, you have someone who has lived his entire life in a town and tried to support the community anyway he can, get condemned. All I ask is that everyone wait and get the actual facts before you actually condemn. If you wait long enough, you'll see all the politics play out. Let's see if the Enterpise and the news will cover that!

Posted by: bret on Sep 4, 2008 at 08:08 PM
But is it really volunteering if you "pay" yourself later? I don't think so. So he volunteers, he still stole from the Lions Club which is dispicable. bottom of the barrel to be honest.

Posted by: Lea on Sep 4, 2008 at 06:55 PM
First I would like to say Terry was wrong in what he did; however the majority of you that are condemning him don't know the entire story. I do know the entire story and what I can say is that a lot of what is going on is politics. Terry is human. Terry made a mistake. Has no one ever made a mistake that they wished they could change? Just because he worked for the police department doesn't mean he is not capable of making mistakes like every other human being. Plus, is this something that should make frontpage news? Really, come on Martin County, isn't there enough crime, politics and corruption in Williamston to keep the paper busy. Instead you have to go after someone who has spent almost all of his life helping others. Whether it be the Lions Club or a Gospel Singing, Terry has always put others first. Terry knows he made a mistake and is sorry for it but is it worth the news media trying to ruin a persons life? Do you think this would have made news in Raleigh?

Posted by: Susan Location: Greenville on Sep 4, 2008 at 05:45 PM
I too have known Terry for a long time, and am very concerned about this. Yes, Terry has done alot of good in the community, and I can only hope that he got into some sort of a financial bind and was too "proud" to ask for help. Im hoping that he took this money with all intentions of putting in back but just got caught in the process. Yes, it was wrong of him to do, but nonetheless, there has to be a legit reason that he chose this route.

Who CARES!!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 4, 2008 at 04:08 PM
The reason he did or didn't do this crime is not for us to judge. That is why we have courts and judges. The news media alone knows part of the facts not all the facts; and people in the community needs to wait for all the facts to come out; before making remarks. he his human and he has a family we need to think about.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 4, 2008 at 03:51 PM
to the person who stated "stand there and defend yourself" It is impossible to do that you have to resign because of local and state statues! Why don't you find out what happened and you put yourself in his shoes. Why don't all of you people who think you no everythin bout everybody who has been accused of doing wrong just think before you Speak! remind me of a bunch of Democrats! Get the truth before you start making such comments!

Its funny how people are so quick to stand to defend this man when they dont even know what happened themselves. Of course he may have been a good man whose to say he wasnt but the point is he is suspected of stealing money. If hes innocent why resign, stand there and fight to clear your name.

I have known Terry for years and I have also worked closely with him. I trust him completely and feel the accusations are false. We have served on committees together and he has been the one in charge of the funds and we have never had any problems or questions in regards to the money. There has never been a time that he couldnt show us right down to the letter where every penny was. I honestly feel a grave mistake has been made and I would hope that it will be rectified. God bless Terry and his family through this most troubling time.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 4, 2008 at 11:43 AM
Wrong is Wrong but no one but Terry knows the real story. Terry is a good man & he deserves support from the people who know him. Everyone will have their opinion of what happen and their opinion of him but don't judge or make rude comments about the man until you have walked a day in his shoes. As far as the Enterprise they have always reported information wrong and the editor has no business being the editor. But we do live in Martin County so if you do something wrong the enterprise will report about it whether its right or not.

Posted by: Concerned Citizen on Sep 4, 2008 at 11:19 AM
What you people do not realize and I no for a fact is that the money that was taken from the Lions Club was paid back as a matter of fact the Lions club had to pay Mr. Holliday money back. Terry is a honest man unless you people no the truth quit making up all these stupid remarks! If you do not believe this that I am typing want you contact the Police Dept. or Sheriffs Dept. Let them tell you the truth, just don't you people sit there and assume cause you no what that gets you. find out the truth them talk!

Posted by: anonymous on Sep 4, 2008 at 11:09 AM
I know Terry and he is a good man. I believe there is more to this story than what we are hearing. Withhold judgement until he has his day in court.

Posted by: M.C. Citizen Location: Williamston on Sep 4, 2008 at 10:43 AM
Stealing is a terrible crime regardless of who you steal from, but to steal from an organization such as the Lions Club is just down right horrible. Also, to surround yourself by law enforcement officers on a daily basis and be able to do something like this shows us just how deceptive some people can be. I know Mr. Holliday is/was involved with several community organization and I just hope people don't decide not to donate to them because of this incident.

Posted by: anonymous Location: NOT IN MARTIN COUNTY! on Sep 4, 2008 at 10:38 AM
I have known Terry for a very long time and to read viewers negative remarks after all he has done for his community and to do whatever he could for people not only in Martin County and the Williamston area but all over Eastern NC give the man a BREAK! NOBODY IS PERFECT not even you freaking people who want to continue bashing him over and over. And to you people or to the person who cannot get there story right from the beginning. IF YOU PEOPLE DO NOT NO THE TRUTH BEFORE YOU START RUNNING IT KEEP YOUR (deleted) MOUTH SHUT! Thats the problem with living in a small town everybody knows your business or if they don't no it they will stsrt making up a lot of bull! Let Terry, move on with his life you people are nothing more than a bump in the road for him for he will keep going. I just cannot believeyou people will cast judgement before you no the whole truth. Terry may God be with you and your family

Whatever happened has happened. Terry and his family needs our prayers. My question is for the enterprise...why splatter his name and picture in the paper when their has been actuall officers of martin county who have been involved in well we will just say bad situations that invovled the law and their was never no report in the paper? Why are you guys picking on Terry. Why not pick on the other bad guys as well

Posted by: anonymous Location: Wiliamston on Sep 4, 2008 at 09:46 AM
I know that Mr. Holliday volunteered more of his personal time towards our community than most over the years. I hope the community will withold judgement. Personally, he and his family are in my prayers.

I have known Terry for over 25 years. I don't know the full situation of why he did what he did, but I am totally shocked by it. It is really a shock to your system when it is someone you know.

Posted by: VBush Location: MHCY on Sep 4, 2008 at 01:21 AM
I think if you are a member of law enforcement and you commit a crime, the punishment should be double or triple what any other citizen would get. It gets very tiring reading about all the bad guys that are supposed to be looking out for the public. Maybe if they knew that they would get 15 years as opposed to the 5 years a citizen would get, possibly it could help motivate them to stay on the right path. Maybe the background checks don't go deep enough. I don't know, but it seems to me there are too many bad cops out there. It makes you wonder when you see one, Is he a good cop or a bad cop? DISGUSTING!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Robersonville on Sep 3, 2008 at 11:43 PM
Terry has worked years tirelessly for years helping the Lions Club, Crime Stoppers and law enforcement on his own time. I do not know the details of the charges, but he and his family deserves our prayers.

Not only did he steal money from crimestoppers but they provided him a vehicle to drive. But my question is I wonder if the poeple of law enforcement that called Mr. Holiday a freind will stand with him now like times past or turn their backs to him. I wonder if he will still help some people at election time?
