Governor Easley Petitions Federal Government to Leave Forests Alone

Opening up Federal forest land to roads and timber harvesting isn't sitting well with Governor Mike Easley.

One of those areas is the Croatan Forest which runs through parts of Eastern Carolina. Easley has petitioned the Federal government to leave the land alone and a Federal Advisory Panel is weighing the petition this week. A

n Assistant District Ranger in Craven County's Croatan National Forest says they don't expect any changes either way.

A spokesman for the U.S.D.A. says he expects his agency to rule on the petition soon.
