A woman in Colombia is recovering in the hospital after giving birth to a baby girl weighing more than 13 pounds.

Baby Angelly was delivered by Cesarean-section in northern Colombia and tips the scale at 13 pounds and two ounces, that's the the average size of a four-month-old.

Doctors are trying to figure out why the girl is so large. Angelly is now receiving oxygen due to breathing problems and is receiving nutrients via an i-v but other than that, medical staff say she is in good health.

Obama 08 4 Prez I agree with you 100% I always catch myself watching someone elses kids when they say somethng funny! My kids talk to their kids and before you know it you feel like your part of the conversation. Then you have met another mom in our society! We have something in common, kids the terrable two, the worse year of threes and ohh of course potty training! Good luck to mom and her big baby girl. Im sure she is beautiful. Love for your children is like no other love.

Thanks for the chuckles, everybody! I have had only 1 daughter (my little peanut, 5lb, 2oz, 19 in. --she is now topping the charts for height and weight), and I can only wish the parents of big babies the best and LOTS of recovery time!

A big congratulations to this Mom! I too had a 13lb 14oz and 24inches in length son 26 years ago. Today he is 6foot 8inches tall and very lean. He was a natural delivery, extremely painful and 2 weeks late. The doctor knew he would be possibly larger and should have done a C-section. My first son was 10lb 4oz. Large babies run in our family per my parents, my brother and I were both app. 7kilos each (all from Europe). Being this large he was very hard to lift into the car, he was wearing large diapers and clothing instantly and had to be fed baby cereal via bottle syringe from the second day since he was so hungry he screamed me out of the house and car. The older boy too was fed cereal from the second week on. Milk was never enough for either of them. Both boys were totally healthy and I never had diabetes or anything else as the doctors seemed to suspect when one has large children.

My 1st son weighed 9lb 150z, my 2nd weighed 11lbs 2 1/20z, my 3rd weighed 6lbs 150z. I had them all natural, with no complications and no health problems.

I'm happy for the mother but not sure why it's headlines. I also had big babies and so did many others here. BTW - "just so ya know" mine were both born by section and had off-the-chart APGAR scores so Caesarean delivery is not a cause of unhealthy newborns.

My daughter weighed 10lb 2 1/2oz and we couldn't bring her home in the infant car seat. She was so quished in that they made us get a bigger one before we could leave with her. :) She is now 20 years old and weighs 118 lbs. :)

Well I'm not going to lie, I must give you women a hand. Both my kids weighed 6 lbs 10 ozs and the second one i couldn't even walk. I thought he was going to kill me. I had them naturally. I was a punk, I screamed for pain medication, and had my tubes tied at the same time. They say,"God doesn't put anymore on you than you can bare" and i think he meant pregnant woman! Once you have a child you join a private/public/secret/open sisterhood. We see each other in Target and Walmart. We laugh when someone else's child says something funny. We don't make frowned up faces when we hear a child cry when they didn't get their way. We know to ignore the mom that's eye level with their child having that "stop misbehaving talk". It doesn't separate us by creed, color, or religion. Only criteria is ......have a baby. So we welcome a new sister. May God have mercy on her! I have 6 years until my youngest is 18, but I've heard you never stop being a mom.

It's funny to read all of the post. It's like people telling a big fish story. Next it's going to say, "I had a 52 lb. baby in 1978."

Posted by: just so ya know Location: nc on Sep 3, 2008 at 05:00 PM
More than likely the "breathing problems" are related to the fact that she was born via cesarean section.

Vickie, I was commenting on the fact that not all large babies have diebetes nor does the mother. Also to the insight of raising a large baby. By the way, how many large children have you birthed?

I had a an 11 pound baby girl also- I am a healthy (not big) woman, and my doctor couldnt find out why she was so big either, but she made it in our local paper, and people heard about her and came up to see her! She looked like a toddler compared to the other babies in the nursery! and I had her VAGINALLY- i LITERALLY FLAT LINED FOR 2 MIN, CUZ my body couldnt handle it! But she is a healthy 12 year old girl now!!

My sister-in-law had a 13 pound baby boy 16 years ago, and 5 years later had a 10 pound baby girl. They never suffered from particular health problems (though, I'm surprised they don't have kidney stones with all of the Mountain Dew they drink...), and the girl is not only top of her class, but top of her middle school.

While you do not hear of most babies coming into this world at 13 pounds, My dad actually weighed in at 13 pounds when he was born. Now seventy something years old he weighs about 170 lbs.

I have 2 sons. My first weighed 10 1/2 lbs. and 6 years later my second son weighed 12 lbs. 1 oz. My oldest son wore size 3 month clothes home from the hospital and my younger son wore size 6 month home. The hospital had to get their diapers and t-shrits from the pediatric floor of the hospital. My first son's pediatric doctor thought he might be diabetic since I had no health issues and was not overweight and only gained 26 lbs while I was pregnant. They tested him many times before releasing him and he was a perfectly healthly baby boy. So by the time my second son was born they did not question multiple times if he was diabetic. I just have large babies. And I did not have a c-section either time, only long labors. My sons are now 25 and 20 and very healthy and productive adults. Congratulations to the mother in the article! She will have clothes to return and people will always expect more of her child because they will think she is older than she is because of her size!

I also had an 11 pounder , and did NOT have gestational diabetes. I also did not gain any weight whatsoever. AND I had her the "old fashioned way"...UGHHHH

well, i am sure the baby will be ok. ya never know about pregnancies and this woman may had been a big woman who ate well. lol. or the baby could be the 1st female andre the giant. just leave the couple alone and let them enjoy their birth.

congratulations to MOM. I had an 11 pound baby, and did NOT have gestational diabetes. Me and baby were periodically tested, and did NOT have it. She was born by C-section, the week before her due date.

all i can say is congrats to the parents...... saw on discovery health where a baby was born a couple of years ago that weighed 14 pounds 5 ounces. and mom wasn't diabetic. some folks just have big babies

Posted by: Big babies Location: Greenville on Sep 1, 2008 at 08:22 PM
My six year old cousin weighed 13 lbs 6 oz when she was born. They really underestimated her weight and the doctors stop my aunt's labor the month before she born. Believe it or not, she was born naturally. There were problems and both of them almost died. Last year my cousin was diagnosed with cerebral palsy which I believe had everything to do with her traumtic birth.

Posted by: Obama 08 4 Prez! on Sep 1, 2008 at 01:33 PM
gestational diabetes, and I'm surprised they didn't take the baby before now. As much measuring and ultra sounding they do, it would have alerted them the size of the baby. But this really isn't that big, I've heard of much bigger through c-section. Still I wish mom and baby big girl well.

To "Wondering", I'd rather these headlines and hope we have nothing else to report on than continue to hear about the crime and violence that surrounds us!! I hope the mother and baby are doing well!!

Posted by: wondering on Sep 1, 2008 at 09:01 AM
I am not sure why this made headlines....it is not that uncommon, particularily in mothers who develop gestational diabetes.

Posted by: Kat Location: Washington on Sep 1, 2008 at 08:48 AM
This mother obviously had gestational diabetes. There can be no other reason for the size of this baby unless the mother was allowed to go WAY past her due date. Please her heart and the big bouncing baby girl.

Ouch! Could you just imagine if she had her the "conventional" method!!?? Congrats to her Mommy and Daddy!
