Citizens and community members lifted up their spoons and dished out some cash for the United Way of Pitt County Thursday afternoon.

Greenville Fire & Rescue held its chili cookoff Thursday afternoon at fire station number one on Greene Street.

Thirty participants from the police, fire and city workers cooked up their favorite chili and served up bowl after bowl for the cause. For just three bucks, hungry donors got a bowl of chili, crackers and a drink. All proceeds go to the United Way.

Two fire rescue members won for their chili. Wayne Harris came in third, Mike Hobgood takes second, while Jay and Stacey Pigford at the Greenville public works department took home first place.

Nothing like a bunch of firefighers fighting about whose chili is hotter instead of fighting fires.
