Roughly 3,000 students graduated from East Carolina University in Greenville Saturday.
Senator Mark Basnight spoke at the two commencement ceremonies. Basnight called the graduates "our future."
At the 10 a.m. ceremony, Basnight was given an honorary doctorate of letters. At the 2 p.m. ceremony, the Jarvis Medal, the school's highest service honor, was awarded to the late Dr. Andrew Best. Best was a forward-thinking physician and was one of the first African Americans to serve on the UNC Board of Governors.
