Jacksonville, NC - (WITN) - A volunteer intern with the Onslow County District Attorney's Office has been charged with making copies of documents in the Cesar Laurean case and trying to sell them to an undercover deputy posing as a reporter.
Robert Sharpe is facing felony embezzlement and misdemeanor larceny charges. He posted a $10,000 bond and was released from custody shortly after his arrest.
Sheriff Ed Brown said Sharpe tried to sell the documents for an astronomical amount of money to the undercover deputy.
Earlier today Sharpe admitted to WITN News that he was the focus of the investigation into the theft of documents from the D.A.'s office.
At an afternoon news conference District Attorney Dewey Hudson reassured the public that the Laurean case has not been compromised and that no news organization acted inappropriately.
Laurean is the Camp Lejeune Marine accused of killing Lance Corporal Maria Lauterbach and burying her body in the back yard of his Jacksonville home.
Hudson said Sharpe, an intern from UNC-Wilmington, was only supposed to make two copies of the sheriff's investigative report--one for the D.A.'s office and one for Laurean's attorney.
The Onslow County Sheriff's Department this week began investigating leaks in the Laurean case after certain information appeared on a newspaper blog.
Sharpe told WITN News that he was a confidential source for the Jacksonville Daily News. He was an intern from May until yesterday.
Hudson says they've used interns for years and have never had major problem. The district attorney says Sharpe did an excellent job up until this week.
During the phone interview this morning, Sharpe was critical of the newspaper. "I am very disappointed with the Daily News. I was supposed to be a confidential source, they screwed me over and offered no help or assistance afterward. I put my trust in the organization," Sharpe told WITN.
The Jacksonville Daily News says someone claiming to be a reporter for Newsweek Magazine called them this week.
"We received a call from a reporter from Newsweek seeking information on the case. We contacted someone who we thought might have information and with their permission later provided a phone number to the person we thought was a reporter," publisher Elliot Potter told WITN News. That reporter turned out to be an undercover sheriff's deputy.
The district attorney says they will now make changes on how documents from high profile cases are handled, putting them under lock and key.
Sharpe has his first court appearance Monday morning in Jacksonville.

"Rewards" generally are for information not for producing the criminal in person. You must have express written permission as a contractor to go get someone for state and local law enforcement, otherwise, it's kidnapping. Bounty hunting without a contract is actually illegal in NC and about half of the rest of the US.
To Crystal - I do believe you are wrong.
to no dummy: I do believe the government and Onslow CO Sheriff's office both offered rewards.
