The Pitt County school system will be completely tobacco free starting January of 2007. Monday night, the school board voted to instate the new policy. The tobacco-free schools policy prohibits the use of tobacco at any time on any district-owned, leased or maintained buildings, property or vehicles. The policy applies to students, employees, visitors, guests and vendors, including private vehicles while on school property. Those that violate the policy may be reprimanded, suspended or dismissed. Nearly 70 school systems across the state have already adopted a similar tobacco free policy.
