A crane collapsed Monday afternoon at the Alfred Cunningham Bridge project in New Bern.

Department Of Transportation officials say the mishap happened around 4 P.M. when a large crane collapsed in the middle of the bridge which is being replaced.

We're told that one worker, who did not work for the D.O.T. was injured when he fell from a temporary work bridge into the Neuse river. He was taken to Craven Regional for treatment and we do not know the extent of his injuries.

D.O.T. officials say the bridge was just inspected on Saturday. Work had also begun last Thursday on temporary channels to allow boats through during construction.

The Coast Guard tried to render assistance but were hindered by poor radio communications. We listened to the story unfold from our boat in Beaufort Inlet. The Coast Guard did their best to aid in this accident.

The injured worker was not taken to CRMC, but went to Greenville. Also, the Coast Guard did not rescue him as was reported by other news agencies.

Are there requirements to certify a valid inspection and certification of the operator of cranes at the start of their use on these type projects? Does anyone really check prior to work commencing?
