The Economic Policy Institute says North Carolina ranks eighth in the country for the amount of jobs lost here because of the U.S. trade deficit with China. The report says North Carolina lost nearly 80,000 jobs between 2001 and 2007, including 12,000 in just the last year.

On average nationwide, the institute says the average worker with a four year degree is making $1,400 less, because of competition with China.

The report was supported by the Alliance for American Manufacturing.

If you want companies to stay in NC and in this nation, stop regulating and suing them into oblivion. The bottom line is that it costs too much money to do business here. While it is true that companies pay lower wages in other countries, it is minor compared to the other costs associated with being located here. You can thank our legal system and government for that. Every time we enact a new law to 'save us' from the big bad corporation their cost of business goes up. Once it reaches a certain point, it just makes sense to build a factory off shore and ship the product back here. Shipping costs are nothing compared to regulation and litigation. So for all of you who want to "pass another law" well, this is the result. You asked for it, you got it.
