A young woman from Greene County is dead after getting thrown from the bed of a pick up truck.

The Highway Patrol says 19-year-old Ashley Nicole Bass of Hookerton died Wednesday. She was riding in the bed of a pick up truck on State Road 1400 near NC 123 in her hometown of Hookerton. Troopers say the driver of the truck lost control and flipped off the road. Others in the truck were injured, but unlike Bass, survived.

No word right now on any charges against the driver.

North Carolina State Troopers says it's legal to ride in the bed of a pick up truck in certain counties, including Greene County. Troopers say long as a town in the county does not exceed 3500 residents, it is legal.

I agree with vbush letter for letter. That is the problem with society today. Our government has to much control over us now,and passing more laws is not the answer.

It is against the law in NC to have someone ride in the bed ofa pick up in NC. The only exemption to the law is for farmers with commerical tags to haul workers to the fields. The law was past a few years ago. Not really forced a lot.

Wish I could count the number of times I have seen or heard of people & particular animals that have been killed or hurt from riding in the back of a pickup truck...I understand that it seems to be a Southern thing (and I am a native) to put people & animals in the truck bed,but if only people would THINK about the danger, maybe lives would be saved...I watched a traffic accident at a major intersection & the young man driving a truck was leaning over his beloved pet dog who had fallen out of the truckbed onto the pavement & died...he was crying inconsolably...that picture has haunted me many years...so please people,a truck bed is for cargo, not living, breathing humans or animals...

Eunice Barnes; We don't need more laws! It is not up to the government to keep us safe from anything except foreign invasion. Tragic things happen, that is life. Every time there is an instance of personal tragedy, people think it is time for more laws to save us from ourselves. It is a tragedy that this young girl is gone and I feel for her family and friends, but we do not need more legislation because of it. When the Lord is ready for you to go you will go no matter what you are doing.

This accident should really send a message out. It is really dangerous for anyone to ride in the back of a pickup truck. It should be againt the law to do such a thing.

I am sorry to hear that, thats terrible. I dont think that the driver should be charged unless alcohol or drugs are involved. WoW thats so hurtful--stay strong family!
