$300 Million Added to Price Tag to Replace Bridge

The price tag to replace the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge is rising.

The latest estimate has added more than $300 million to the bill to build a 17 and a half-mile span across Pamlico Sound.

The state prefers to build a shorter and parallel bridge that would cost about $191 million.

Engineers say the existing 43-year-old bridge, the only link between the mainland and Hatteras Island, is deteriorating.
