A former Department of Environment and Natural Resources official is sentenced to prison for agreeing to bribes to speed up the permit process for an ethanol plant in Beaufort County.

Boyce Allen Hudson, 67 years-old, pled guilty in May to extortion and money laundering, soliciting $196,000 from Agri-ethanol Products to help expedite air wand water quality permits. The Raleigh company was trying to construct an ethanol plant near Aurora in Beaufort County.

Hudson was sentenced Wednesday in federal court to 40 months in prison, ordered to pay a fine of $35,000 and make $15,000 in restitution.

AEP only ended up paying Hudson $5,000. Hudson accepted another $15,000 from an FBI undercover agent.

Hudson has to report to prison by November 1st. The ethanol plant has never been built.

The economy is already bad enough in Beaufort County and now this. Who hired this man? He has to report to prison in Nov? If it were "the average Joe" they would have taken him to jail in cuffs right then. I guess that's what money buys you even if it is bribe money. The unemployment rate keeps rising, jobs are getting really scarce, and this is what we are working with. We are in for a nightmare. Who is lobbying for jobs for Beaufort County? Whomever it is they are not doing a good job.
