Local Economic Development Organization May Have Mishandled Funds

A recently released report from the State Auditor's Office shows a local economic development organization may have mishandled millions of dollars in state funds.

The State Auditor's Office contends the Northeast Partnership, which services 16 counties in Northeastern North Carolina, made questionable expenditures with nearly $4 million in state money.

The report says the group gave undocumented bonuses to employees and awarded contracts for projects that have no paper trail.

The group's interim president says the board is taking a proactive approach on all of the issues raised in the audit.
