The UNC Board of Governors has approved planning for East Carolina University's proposed school of dentistry. The board will ask the Legislature for seven million dollars to be split by ECU and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. ECU's plan was tied to a proposed expansion of the school of dentistry at UNC. A spokeswoman for the UNC system says approval by the full board cannot come before November. ECU officials hope their first 50-student dentistry class would enter in 2010, although Chancellor Steve Ballard says there's an outside chance it could open in 2009.
