Penalties for Carrying a Gun on or Near School Property

When a shooting happens near a school, are penalties stiffer for possessing a gun near school property, like the laws where drug free zones have been set up around schools. But the answer is apparently no. The North Carolina State Statute says it's a class one felony for any person to possess or carry, whether openly or concealed, any gun, rifle, pistol, or other firearm of any kind, on school property or to a curricular or extra-curricular activity sponsored by a school. But the penalties do not rise for possessing a gun on nearby property, as is the case with drugs.
