For the second time in a week, the principal of Southeast Elementary School in Kinston says bullets have been fired near the school located on the corner of Bright and McDaniel Streets. This time, kids were outside playing and witnessed the shooting.
The school went into lock down. Officials say it happened around 1:45 Wednesday afternoon. They received reports of multiple shots being fired at 703 Bright Street, right across the street from the school. Officials tells us there were 24 bullets fired, one of which hit a man in the back while he was in the house. That man was taken to Pitt County Memorial Hospital. His condition is unknown.
School officials want to make sure the kids are emotionally OK and have brought in grief counselors. They also tell us they were prepared. As a matter of fact, they had just practiced a drill for this very scenario Wednesday.
