People sunning on North Topsail Beach certainly left with a big fish story today. A huge stingray washed up on the beach around noon near Ocean Sound Village.

North Topsail Beach police say the stingray weighed several hundred pounds and town maintenance workers had to use a front end loader to bury it.

Lt. Lee McKnight tells WITN News that it's the biggest ray he's seen wash up on the beach in his nine years there.

McKnight says just last week a shark washed up in the same area as well.

Actually, the reason why these sizes are seen so rarely is for the simple fact that they mostly prefer deeper/colder sea waters. Stingrays can sometimes grow to be up to 20 ft or longer and can weigh up to 500 lbs. So it's no surprise that this creature washed up. It looks like it lived it's life, and it died of natural causes.

I was fishing on the north end one day when a ray or skate that big (or bigger) jumped out of the water. I heard the splash, looked at the water and he jumped again. He was about the size of the hood of my truck (a tahoe). Beautiful, really. They won't hurt you unles you step on them, and I am willing to bet you would see that one before you stepped on him!
