Across our state and across our nation Monday, the issue of illegal immigration is prompting tens of thousands of people to protest. They are pushing for more immigrant rights, not less as the law stalled in Congress currently outlines.
A pilgrimage for justice and peace is one of the protests in our state. Siler City, Durham and other communities are on its march route, which is expected to end Friday in Raleigh.
In Charlotte, organizers of a no consumption day asked Hispanics to avoid buying any products or paying for any services to demonstrate the financial impact of the Latino population. Protests were also planned in Wilmington and Winston-Salem.
