It was a stormy night in eastern Carolina, with at least three homes struck by lightning.

In Greene County a couple got the shock of their lives Thursday morning, when a bolt came shooting through their living room. Annie Reid says the lightning bounced off a tree and went down her chimney flute shortly after midnight mangling her fireplace, shattered her picture frames and blowing out her phone box and air conditioning unit.

Three fire rescue units responded to the home. No one was injured, but Reid estimates the damage to exceed $10,000.

Two other homes in Greenville were struck by lightning. There were no injuries in those incidents.
