No matter what Greenville residents say should happen to the old Imperial Tobacco Warehouse, the city now has the okay to demolish a portion of the iconic structure.

The smokestack and the watertower are the most recognized part of the warehouse, which still stands despite the fire back in April. Since then, the owner has petitioned to have it torn down. Workers near the site are used to this piece of history. They say it would will be a historic loss. While others say could make way for something better.

The watertower is the only portion slated for demolition. It could be a few more weeks before there word on when rest of the building will come down.

This structure should have been torn down long ago, but unfortunately the people in the building and fire code departments were sleeping on the job. So many buildings in this town are near falling down condition and just need a strong wind to bring them down. We pay these departments personel payroll, we should expect more from them. Replace it with a clock tower, live performance theatre, small shops, galleries, history museum and some restaurants in a cluster of buildings. Greenville can be a destination place to see if a little planning and financial investment were put in place. Right now there is little for people to do or see in uptown that would generate foot traffic on an ongoing basis. I'm all for preserving historic structures but only if they have and continue to be maintained over time. There is money to be invested in this town, but development should maintain the look and history of the uptown area.
