It could have been a catastrophe. The Sands Inn along Highway 12 in the Dare County town of Kitty Hawk erupted in flames Monday night sometime before 11 p.m., sending one tenant to the hospital.
Strong winds from Monday's severe weather fanned the flames, threatening to catch an adjacent restaurant on fire. Five fire departments had to be called in. Decades old, the Sands Inn had been converted to efficiency apartments. Officials say a tenant who was taken to Outer Banks Hospital for smoke inhalation also suffered some burns to his face. Investigators say the cause of the fire was accidental, and electrical.
This was one of two back to back fires on the Outer Banks Monday night. The other destroyed a vacant beach cottage in Nags Head, just an hour before.
