There are more charges against a Wayne County man who deputies say burned a cross in a neighbor's yard.

Deputies say Dixon Steward is back in jail after his arrest yesterday for violating a court order not to have any contact with the victim.

The sheriff's office says the FBI is now investigating Dixon for a possible civil rights violation.

Dixon was arrested last week and charged with ethnic intimidation.

His bond is now set at $35,000.

To all ladies and gentlemen of all colors. Some of the bigotry comes from homes of all colors. My daddy did not like blacks or any color. He was politically correct due to his job . He told me to get along with every one no mater what their color. I say love everyone reguardless of color. We all need each other. Republican or Democrat. God did not intend on US hating each other. Some of the Blacks the Racist type complain about how White s treat them . And they want an apology for what happened for over 400 years and just up till 1970's . I refuse to apologize for anyones actions other than my own. Now What do you think the Indians thought about my white ancestors coming and taking their land. I can tell you for I am also part Cherokee Indian. They hated it! Remeber the Trail of Tears too please. Men of all colors have lied, cheated, killed, and stole to get ahead. Lets all try to move forward. Leave the past behind.Nothing wrong with history, lets not repeat it!!!

It is a shame Rosebud, and can you believe its just skin. Something no one had any control over. Who picked what color or where they were born? No one. I"m on the other side of the fence. When I'm at a black gathering its the white man's fault for everything. White women get away with everything. A black man marries a white woman and he is called an @ss kissing sellout uncle tom. Its on both sides. I have low expectations for the south and the race war. One bad apple will spoil the whole bunch!

A cross is suppose to be a religious symbol. If some idiot wants to burn a cross on someone elses property, he should be charged. I assume it was suppose to be some kind of raciest thing. The other day I was standing in line at the grocery store, behind me was a man wearing a hat that said W.O.W., a closer look read "war on whites". Racism is alive and well everywhere, it' a crying shame.

Thank you to the person who posted to Scott. I tried 3 times and none were posted. Some people are just ignorant to the facts. Steward is blessed he had the neighbors he did. He could have been laying in a field stinking! Everyone isn't intimidated and afraid. There's something out there worst than any thug or gang, please believe me.

The sad thing is this race issue hasbeen going on forever. It will continue for the rest of our lives. Everyone is a racist in some form or another. It is what we do with it that makes us hate or hurt. I hold my own beliefs to my self . But I was raised to help others no matter what color they maybe. We are all related by god and I teach my kids to be the same way. But, I have ran into racism and off colored remarks to me and I just laugh at these people because they are ignorant and I am better than that. Yes Dixon has a problem and needs help. But he cannot get help if he does not help himself. He was way worng to burn that cross and I agree he needs to be locked up for it but what about men of other colors doing harm to women of the caucasion race is this not a hate crime to rape a white woman?? Or rape a black woman ?? Here lately there are just as many black racist if not more than white racsist. It is never gonna go away. We need to learn to deal with it. By being better people!

I agree with some, but not all. I agree with affirmative action, but only if you were wronged in any way. and I may be wrong but I dont think anybody around now was or is forced to do anything, although allot should be forced to work some place. equal right means EQUAL for every one no matter the race.

Posted by: To scott: on Jul 31, 2008 at 11:24 AM
He burned the cross in SOMEBODY ELSE's property, not his own. You go burn something on somebody's property without permission and see what happens. Doesn't matter what it is, could be trash, paper, anything. In a lot of cities, it is illegal to burn trash even in your own yard. The fact that it was a symbol of hatred (do not try to pretend that you are unaware it is a symbol of hatred) doesn't help matters either. Think next time before you start spouting off at the mouth.

For anyone claiming to be a Christian, yet still hate based on race, you are a liar and a hypocrite. You cannot hate people based on their skin color and be of God at the same time. Not the God of the Bible. For those who do not claim to be Christian and who hate on people based on race, you need to find Buddah, Jesus, Allah, or someone or something other than your worshipping your own self. To those who are hardcore atheist and hate on people based on race, find the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, or something to help you see that all people are equal. In short, bigots of any religion, faith, or lack thereof, get over yourself! DSS helps out just as many white people as well as black people. Take the same circumstances for a black and white person, DSS will give the same decision whether it be to approve or deny assistance. It is the circumstances, not the skin color that determine the level of assistance. Stop making excuses for being a bigot!

I have met some of the nicest people and some of the nastiest, racist people since moving here a few years ago. I saw it where I lived before as well. It is not just here, do not be fooled. There are a lot of differences regarding how people of different regions feel about different things. However, you state that there is more racism here, and though there may be I would like to say that in most cases it is more about entitlement than racism. Blacks dislike whites for things that people in today's society can not change (i.e. what happened to the slaves), and whites dislike blacks because some have figured out how to work "the system". Well, both could learn from this, if you want to work the system, ask someone who is they probably will tell you, and as for history, we do not practice slaverly today and everyone has a chance at an education and better life, you just have to want it. People are people, if we would ALL treat each person with respect and diginity we'd ALL be better off.

One race guy, you may be black but I am sure not and neither are my decendants. NOt sure what history books you been reading. And in regards to the cross burning story why is it wrong for anybody to burn a cross if they choose to do so. We burn trash and other things or objects so how can it be illegal or wrong except for a certain group of people that it just happens to offend. These days everything offends everyone. If something on my property happens to offend someone then too bad. I could care less what is on your property. What a person does on there property is there business. I did not read anything about the guy hanging anyone, killing anyone, or even beating anyone.

To K and Tony, You are exactly right and for the most part we are all the same. Technically, we all originated from Africa. Those of us with lighter skin are that way because we migrated further away from the equator. Those with the darker skin(blacks, hispanics, etc) are so becasue they stayed closer to the equator. This means we are all African, scientifically speaking!!!

Hate has no place in our society. We are in a down turned ecconomy, and we look to the government to take care of us. How about the people taking back the goverment. First you have to do away with hate, black, white and brown so that we all become one. A contry can not surive when everyone is a color. Next start voting for people that really care about the USA, not because he is a good ole boy, not because he/she is white/black/brown/male/female. Vote for the one most suitable for the job. If you vote party/color etc you are not doing yourselves any favor. Hang up the boxing gloves and work for AMERICA.

Guess they shouldn't have set his original bond so low....I wonder....did they learn anything from this mistake?

Posted by: carol Location: greenville on Jul 30, 2008 at 05:12 PM
y is his bond so low!! Americans have rights but it's a limit. Throw away the key and burn a cross on his (tail) and let him see how it feels to hurt people w/o touching them.

This is really a sad situation that a person would have this much hatred. But you see this is a person that has allowed satan(the enemey)to use in order to spread hatred in this world. I know in this world today being a born again believer of the Lord Jesus Christ is not popular, but then neither was Jesus popular amongst the Pharisees. We as believers can hate the sin that drove this man to do what he did however, God expects us to lift this man up in prayer that he would ask God to take over his life and mold him to be the person that God intended for all of us to be loving, caring and compassionate towards everyone. GOD GIVES LIFE(SALVATION),LOVE,GRACE,MERCY AND PEACE. Satan gives death, hatred, jealousy,he is the author of confusion. It's time that we born again believers start standing up and expressing what God can do. Love this man because he does have a soul, just hate the sin that drove him to do what he did. None of us are perfect, sin is sin there is no degree of sin.

T and k: As a former member of one of the reserve components here in NC I witnessed a high ranking medical officer without any reason calling a sergeant a blipping Puerto Rican. Another incident that I witnessed at the dining facility at a hospital in this area. I heard a young Chicana lady telling a Puerto Rican fellow NOT to speak Spanish to her because people got offended and some of her teachers objected the talk. SB in Beaufort county: I don't buy your cheap assessment that the northern citizens are the ones to be blamed for the racism. Are you a sociology expert, please? About six years ago I was fishing at an OBX pier and this fellow loudly stated that ALL blacks are N... The sixties mentality is still around and a lot of parents encourage it. Cross b urning is in a lot of American minds like it or NOT...

Burning a Cross? That took alot of time and so much unhealthy hate. I feel Dixon has a serious problem. To only have a $500 bond? Seems as though the magistrate has just a serious problem as Dixon. This is a Hate Crime, to let this pitiful man out of jail is telling someone to harm him. Surely, Dixon need mental health. The magistrate, needs mental health also, because he wants Dixon to be hurt. There is nothing new under the sun. The lady that is hurting because she feels as though DSS treated her wrongly. Learn your history, Welfare was established for the White race. Blacks were unable to get assistance until the 60's. Actually, the 70's. It takes a lot of energy to hate. Dixon, put this hate toward something positive; build a house, you seem to be a great carpenter. To the individual Dixon placed the cross, you got love. There is definitely Love in your heart. That is the greatest of the commandments; Love your neighbor. I know you must be Black, because Blacks show compassion.... .

Wanda, I totally agree with you. If everyone would wake up and realize that we are all AMERICANS and not judge people by their race or sex, this world would be a lot better off.

Tony and K. I too see racism as a large problem here in the Bibnlebelt. I was raised here and I have raised my children to see no color, just people. Love has no color. Jesus said he was no respecter of person. We should not be either. We are all created by God. He did not make us different colors to seperate us but more to unite us and accept the differences we all have. In all honesty we are none of one nationality. We are all mixed. I have traced my ancestery and I am Indian, Black, and White. I have no problem with who I am. I am a Christiam first and then just plain old me. Also, thank you for your service to our country and freedom. I commend both of you.

Tony, I really feel for you. My husband and I are originally from CA and stayed here after leaving the AF as well. I see and hear more racist comments, attitudes, looks, etc here than anywhere else I have lived. Where we used to live in CA, racism was out of the question. Our high school back then had every nationality and culture under the sun. Those who dared to make racists comments were shunned by the rest of the student body because we didn't tolerate such things. Here in NC, unfortunately it is still alive. Although at times, it's more subtle than blatant but the fact remains that it still exists. I hope you meet those people who have the same views as you.

Posted by: SB Location: Beaufort County on Jul 24, 2008 at 10:23 AM
Tony, yes there are bigots here in NC. Many of them are from up North. Most of the people I know are not bigotted racists, but I do know some. I choose not to associate with them. Some of the most virulent racists I have ever met came from other states, all over the U.S., not just the South. There's no denying that there are racist southerners, but I guarantee that other areas of the nation have their share too. I do agree that you made a mistake coming here to live. You have generalized and stereotyped everyone who lives here. One more thing, remember that racisism is a nasty disease that effects people of all races.

I don't care what anyone says...eastern NC is one of the most racist places in the US. I was not raised that way, as a white male in MA, and when I was in the USAF it was a VERY rare occasion that you saw it. But, in 2002 I decided to move to Eastern NC upon leaving the military. I believe I made a mistake. Within 6 mos of living in Gville I experienced / met more bigots than the previous 28 yrs on this earth. The hatred and ignorance I see daily in this place everyone raves about makes me sick. For the first few years, I reprimanded every offense that I came across; but it became very tiresome... it just occured way to often. Now, I just walk away and disassociate myself from those individuals. They call this the bible belt, HAH! I'm not a bible basher, and rarely go to church, but I do believe and pray. Look amongst you this day. We are surrounded by hypocrits and liars. EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK! No one wants to hear the truth any more. They say they do, but they don't.

Posted by: Mac Location: Greenville on Jul 24, 2008 at 03:47 AM
If he got a $500 dollar bond, you know he is not going to get no more than unsupervised probation when the case goes to trial. Its sad that racism is still a problem when gas and a gallon of milk are the same price. People should come together and forget about the skin color, it's really stupid!!1

The NAACP didn't host the million man march, it convened by Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. Minister Benjamin Chavis Muhammad was the National Director of the Million Man March. The event included efforts to register African Americans to vote in US Elections and increase black involvement in volunteerism and community activism. And as a black female I have never went to a "NAACP parade". But I have visited family in South Carolina were the KKK were marching. And so I too were offended. Not only were they marching and yelling a certain kind of power, they had police protection.....white and black policemen. And if your offended everyday by the actions of SOME black people then my advice to you would be, don't go to that place. Obviously they are ignorant. But I'll tell you what I've learned from living in the south...you can't control what comes out of some one's mouth no matter how stupid it is. I hope Thur. is better.

Posted by: Just thinking out loud Location: WayCO on Jul 23, 2008 at 04:31 PM
I do believe that this type of behavior is unjustified and I do not condone what Mr. Steward did. However,I don't recall anyone reporting that my rights as a white member of society have been violated when the NAACP can have their million man marches on Washington and have their NAACP parades at a local level and I have to drive a different route as to not disturb the gathering. I do want to reiterate that I DO NOT condone what Mr. Steward did. He should be punished and for more that $500 bond. I'm saying that when a black person is offended, it's all over the paper. BUT, when a white person is offended, nothing is said or reported. I am offended everyday by the actions of SOME black people, but if I report it to the police, it's explained away or overlooked. Equality to everyone... good, bad or indifferent.

I know alot of whites that on assistance as well as blacks, now the Mexicans--thats a whole nother story, they really can get alot of help whereas US Americans are turned down, so lets not badger the Americans, its neither the black nor white peoples fault that the Gov turn some down and some can get it all

We have State manuels we must follow & I don't recall seeing that race was a factor in approving any case. You may view these manuels on line at info.dhhs.state.nc.us. I wish both white & black races could just get along, we all are God's children.

Mr. Steward, at this stage of your life it's apparent that you need an historical education and to read the Constitution of the United States. You have shown your neighbor and the world that you oppose our freedom to live where one chooses/civil rights. Your cross burning is an attitude of hatred and I hope that your supporting peers will grow up in mind and spirit. No one is afraid of you''''. As to the court system, you are extremely to lenient for this historical crime. You to have sent a negative message. Neighbor, stay safe, stay alert.

Posted by: Mickie Location: eastern nc on Jul 23, 2008 at 09:53 AM
Everybody wants to talk about equality and such, but are things really equal? NO, they arent. I am a divorced white mother of two, working two jobs to support my family. I asked for help from our "wonderful" government assistance and was denied because I actually had a job, no matter that it didnt pay much. I told the "case worker" that if I was black and spoke spanish, then I would recieve everything they had and she just smiled at me and sent me on my way. Months later I tried again when circumstances changed for me and was told that I would be better off if I didnt work at all, then I could get everything. What is wrong with this, you get punished for working. I see so many blacks and hispanics wearing new clothes and driving new vehicles using EBT cards at the checkout. It really burns me up and could make a person do something so crazy as burning a cross or hanging a rope in their yard to let people know, we are tired of this mess.

The slap on the wrist bail that was set in this case only condones this behaviour. I am sure he will get lots of good ol' boy slaps on the back as he is released from custody. We are all different but bleed the same. His bail should have been more if only to make a point that this action would not be tolerated in the county.

A $500.00 bond? Let's get real, even a teenager could pay that! Methinks he should still be in jail as a public menace.

Posted by: Nita Location: Greensboro, NC on Jul 22, 2008 at 10:58 AM
Unbelievable. I once was proud that in Eastern North Carolina we looked beyond race and saw the sirit of an individual. As good ole' country folk I thought of us as level headed and fair. Apparently somebody didn't listen to their Mama and go to church on Sunday to understand that we all bleed the same blood and will die and return to the same dirt. Someone needs to do some assessments on this man because he sounds like he may be mentally challenged and be in need of medication. Either that or he's just stupid. The proper punishment would be to make him hold the cross while it's burning. America is at war with terrorists, losing lives everyday in the Middle East and this psycho is fighting with his neighbor??? Go figure...

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 22, 2008 at 10:27 AM
Further proof that ignorance is alive and well...now if the neighbor would have retaliated with gunfire, then what?

Posted by: confused on Jul 22, 2008 at 10:08 AM
Let me get this straight. You don't like your neighbor, so you build a cross and set it on fire their yard? What are you expecting this to accomplish?
