A North Carolina county manager is urging citizens to increase the opposition to a proposed Navy landing field.

The Daily Advance of Elizabeth City reported Monday that Camden
County Manager Randell Woodruff suggested that local residents go
door-to-door to explain why they feel the proposed landing field is a bad idea for the county.

The Navy is studying two sites in North Carolina and three in Virginia for a proposed field where carrier jets can practice landings.

Woodruff says the county already has a good start in opposing the project because it has hired a law firm and a public relations
representative.

Sorry Generation Kill, I look up and see jets everyday in Washington. I have sees Osprey from the Marine base, Harriers, A-10s, C-130s, C-17s, Marine Helicopters. Try looking up once and awhile. I was never in the military but would have been honared to serve. So I guess with the housing mess, my house will be worth less? If you already live in Camden you already see and hear jets and planes everyday. Have a nice day.

I just have a few comments about this. What you people do not relise is that we live in eastern North carolina near the coast. there are alot of chemicals used on the farm lands around the area. Terrorist love these chemicals lets not forget 9-11 it happend once. It will happen again you all need to relise that this would be a good idea becouse it would bring jobs to your community. People there are jets flying over your areas right now and have been for some time. With out haveing control of the skies over eastern North Carolina we are opening up a new avenue of approach for these terrorist groups. This is real and a threat to us and our home land. My father retired from Fort Bragg and there wild life there is not effected by planes they protect the wild life and take care of it. i have seen alot of wild life here alot of deer have cancer in there stomach lyning from eating material from crops in the fields. That is from the chemicals used to grow the crops. Lets be real.

Bob: The aircraft carrier idea sounds reasonable on the surface. The problem is that it is cost prohibitive. Keeping an aircraft carrier in ready condition and operational will cost much much more than the cost of buying a piece of property and simulating the landing conditions of a real aircraft carrier. An aircraft carrier would have to be fully operational and crewed to do this. Also, we need a place for the "new pilots" to practice a carrier landing before they actually do it. We would possibly lose many billion dollar aircraft and young pilots if they had to make their first landings on an actual carrier deck and made a mistake. (Plane and Pilot go over the side). I do not have a dollar figure for maintaining a fully operational carrier off the coast for pilots to practice on, but I am quite sure it would completely eclipse the cost of a piece of property and all that would entail.

The housing market is currently way down. Allowing this OLF, will ensure the housing market in this area depreciates even more. The only people who wouldn't mind living in an area with loud noise, is people in or retired from the military.

Ron, this is my point, aircraft use noise abatement when they land and take off. MP, there will be a lot of money in Camden co if they build. Where you got you info is wrong. The base will employ personnel to man it and take care of it...I have three brothers living there and they have no problem with it, was how we grew up, C-130s and later C-17s flying above. Actually enjoyed the show. Stop going to OLF web sites who spew anger over any development. I would welcome the soldiers to Washington.

I'm sick to death of hearing of all the opposition to an OLF! I live near Cherry Point MCAB, and I hear the jets roaring over my house every day. Rather than bothering me, the sound is music to my ears. The sound of roaring jets makes me know that those wonderful young fliers are practicing to keep ALL Americans safe! Where is your patriotism, you idiots?

The OLF will not generate revenue. It is an unmanned base. Just because Camden is small doesn't mean it can be treated like the toilet bowl of North Carolina.

Camden County doesn't need the money. They can afford their stop light. Certainly they don't need to support training our troops for carrier duty. I love how people incite riot over this when they really do not have a clue what is would be like. I grew up near a military base. I never noticed it since it was part of everyday life at Ft Bragg. I wasn't worried about them disturbing the wildlife since they took care of the wildlife, federal law. I guess people should move from the Greenville airport area now since they have jets coming there too.....

If North Carolinians keep it up, they will push more and more revenues right up to Virginia! Great job...bring on the OLF!

Why can't they put the OLF in the dare county bombing range? I think it is over 46,000 acres or put a decommissioned aircraft carrier out the alligator river where they practice bombing runs

Posted by: MP Location: Camden on Jul 21, 2008 at 10:34 AM
Thats a good point by Mr. Bob. There are a good number of decomisioned aricraft carriers that could be used. Would be a heck of alot more realistic then landing in a giant corn field.

Posted by: Mr. Bob on Jul 21, 2008 at 10:09 AM
Why don't they do the taxpayers a favor and pull a decommisioned air craft carrier out in the ocean and practice there. Why does it take 35,000 acres for a landing strip?
