Lottery Helping Local Businesses

425 million dollars, that's how much the general assembly estimates schools will get during the first fiscal year of the North Carolina Education Lottery.

And nearly 5,000 business owners across the state are cashing in. Whether retailers will scratch-off or not, they'll get a portion of the administrative fees that go into handling the sale of lottery tickets. They get 7 dollars out of every hundred dollars sold, not to be confused with proceeds lottery winners receive, which no retailer gets money from. Business owner Billy Peaden says selling lottery tickets at his four convenience stores is a bet he can't pass up.

Business owners can still request lottery machines. You can learn more at http://lottery.nc.gov/info_retailers.htm
