The East Carolina Heart Institute is one step closer to reality as a ground breaking ceremony was held Friday. Local and national dignitaries, including U.S. Senator Elizabeth Dole, were on hand in Greenville for the event. The facility will be six stories and cover 375,000 square feet.
It will treat cardiovascular patients with state of the art technology, while another building will house research facilities. World renowned heart surgeon Doctor Randolph Chitwood will serve as the director of the institute. Officials hope to have the facility complete by 2008.
