More than 5,000 retailers across Eastern Carolina are now selling scratch-off tickets for the North Carolina Lottery. Sales started Thursday.
So what are your chances of actually winning in the North Carolina Lottery?
John Kros, Assistant Professor of Decision Sciences at ECU says the chances you will win are on average about one in five. Kros says while that may sound promising, the payout is often less than what you paid for the ticket. For example, your chances of winning from a dollar scratch off ticket are one in five, but the pay out may only be 50 cents.
To win a dollar back, the full cost of the ticket, your chances go down to one in eight.
The state has a comprehensive website on how the North Carolina lottery works and where the profits go.
