More federal money is needed to prepare for a pandemic flu. Those words are from Governor Mike Easley at the state's first flu pandemic summit in Raleigh.
Easley said President Bush's budget includes only $350,000,000 for states to prepare for a possible pandemic, a widespread outbreak. Easley says that's not enough and he wants a bigger financial commitment from the federal government.
That message was delivered to Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt. Leavitt told the governor and others these summits, along with federal funding to prepare for a pandemic, are at the top of his priority list.
