Fire officials say, just before 2 p.m. Wednesday, a fire spread to several structures before moving into state wetlands. Allegedly, the man was burning trash illegally in his yard.
Mann's Harbor and Roanoke Island volunteer firefighters dug in to keep property damage to a minimum and save the resident’s home. The Forestry Service called in a Fish and Wildlife chopper to drop water and confine the swamp fire.
