The controversial requirement that kids entering kindergarten get an eye exam before starting school will not go into effect this fall. The law was to take effect for the start of the 2006 school year. Students who failed to get the exam would not have been allowed to start school. Tuesday, a Superior Court judge signed an order preventing the state from enforcing that requirement until at least July of 2007. The agreement stems from a lawsuit that 70 local school boards filed, including several from Eastern Carolina, to prevent the requirement from taking effect.
