Judge Rules in Favor of Bertie County to Close Three Schools

There has been a defeat for citizens in Bertie County fighting to keep three elementary schools open.

John Davis, one of the coordinators of "Save Our Schools," tells WITN that Judge Terrance Boyle decided to accept the school board's proposal to close Askewville, Aulander and J.P. Law Elementary Schools in an effort to satisfy a decades old federal desegregation lawsuit against the school district.

Under the board's proposal, Askewville and J.P. Law Elementary schools will close June 2007, while Aulander Elementary would close in 2009 unless the board can get funding to build a new school there.
