The news that Dana Reeve died from lung cancer, the wife of actor Christopher Reeve, who died following a decade of paralysis, is putting the deadly disease of lung cancer back in the spotlight. And in North Carolina, the numbers aren't good. The North Carolina Central Cancer Registry estimates there will be 5,500 new cases of lung cancer in our state this year. Lung cancer death rates here are among the highest in the United States. As few as 12 other states had higher lung cancer death rates than North Carolina in 1999.
