An early Monday morning house fire in Northern Bertie County claims the life of a pregnant woman and her son is severely burned.
Authorities say around 9:30 Monday morning, a home on Lombardy Road in Aulander was engulfed in flames. Investigators say a pregnant woman and her five-year-old son were severely burned on their faces, necks, arms and legs.
Later Monday afternoon, authorities were notified the woman died as a result of her injuries. Aulander police Chief Jimmy Barmer says the little boy also suffered burns in his throat from smoke inhalation.
Lawmen say the cause of the fire is under investigation. The woman was taken by to Pitt County Memorial Hospital and then transferred to the Chapel Hill Burn Center where she passed away. Lawmen say there was also a man inside the home, but he suffered no injuries.
