With slightly warmer temperatures, gusty winds and dryer air, the conditions were just right for brush fires, and Washington County fire crews were fighting several blazes through out the day, Sunday.
A brush fire on Highway 94 in Creswell around 2 p.m. burned for nearly 30 minutes while responders fought to put it out. Within minutes fire crews were then dispatched to a brush fire at Pettigrew State Park near the Washington Tyrrell county line. The Forestry Service, the Creswell Fire Department, and the Lake Phelps Fire Department were still battling those fires at 6 p.m., but officials say they were making headway.
Officials don't have word yet on how many acres may have burned. Pettigrew State Park holds some of our state's few natural forests.
