Police say neighbors helped catch a man who they say attacked an elderly Rocky Mount woman in her yard last night.

It happened in the 200 block of Clifton Road last night shortly after 7:00 p.m.

Police say the suspect, Keith House, approached 86-year-old Doris Booth and punched her in her face and on her body.

The woman began yelling, catching the attention of several neighbors. The suspect ran off on his bicycle with several residents chasing him.

Officers say they found the 22-year-old House on Forest Hill Avenue with the help of the residents who gave them detailed information on his path of travel.

House was charged with assault inflicting serious injury. He's in the Nash County jail on a $50,000 bond.

The victim, Doris Booth, is in stable condition at Nash General Hospital.

It's a true shame when you aren't safe in your own yard. The neighbors that helped capture the criminal are heroes. Thank you for restoring my faith in the human race.

The group that chased and caught him should have beat him to a senseless, bloody pulp. Let him see how it feels to be hit. Anyway , he will probably jump under the "snuggly feeling blanket" of unspoken criminal civil right, and not recieve a harsh penalty.

Glad some of you managed to say the same as I tried befor the WITN PC police edited my comment.

I say give the elderly people tasers and take it from the law enforcement--they dont use them wisely

Good job for the good neighbors. But the report doesn't say anything about the punk being treated at the hospital before going to jail. You forgot to give him a little justice of your own. Chances are he won't serve much time other than county jail. Next time this happens the neighbors should give the perp something to remember if you get my drift.

HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN PLACED ON A ONE MILLION DOLLAR BOND THATS THE PROBLEM WITH THE SYSTEM JUST A SLAPE ON THE HAND. IF HE POST BAIL HE WILL MOST LIKEY GO TO COURT AND GET PROBATION MAKE HIM PAY THE PRICE AND DO THE TIME FOR THE CRIME BEFORE HE HURTS SOMEONE ELSE OR KILLS THEM

It is so good to hear that are still some good citizens in this world who is not afraid to get involved. You hear so many stories of things happening while by-standers just stood there and it just sickens me because we are all suppose to help one another. I hope that the lady is okay and that this coward gets exactly what he deserves. Good job everyone!!

How do you beat up an elderly lady then jump on a bicycle? Its men like DRE that keep me putting on my makeup and watch my weight. A true man should always have something nice to look at.

HOW WOULD HE FEEL IF THIS WERE HIS GRANDMOTHER OR OTHER ELDERLY FEMALE FAMILY MEMBER? I THINK I READ SOMEWHERE "HONOR THY FATHER & MOTHER!" I THINK HE MISSED IT, BUT IF I REMEMBER MY CIVICS WELL, THERE'S A COPY OF THE BOOK IN JAIL, AS WELL AS A CONVENIENT CLERGYMAN TO HELP HIM UNDERSTAND. SOUNDS LIKE A WORKABLE PLAN. THANK YOU

Only a lowly coward could do that to someone. Probably wanted drug money. SCUMBAG!!!

I am one of the people who chased this guy down yesterday. I pushed him off of his bike and he took off running and later(when I caught up to him) I grabbed his pants leg and arm as he was climbing over a fence, but lost grip on him because we were both sweaty from running. My holding him for the few seconds that I did, was enough time for us to make a circle around him and it was only a matter of seconds before they apprehended him. I don't even live in the neighborhood; I was just visiting a friend and knew the guy looked extremely suspicious. And no, he didn't want to fight me(male) even though I pushed him down off of his bike. COWARD!!! And thanks, for calling us heroes. That means alot.

Anyone who inflicts serious or deadly bodily harm on an infant or the elderly should receive the death penalty. I feel the same way about drug pushers.

Lord please have mercy cause if that was my mother that that punk punched, he will need all the help in the world to keep me and my family members from rippin his worthless heart out of that miserable chest of his. How shameful is that to punch an 86 year old "Lady"--coward! I hope the real thugs in jail give him exactly what he deserves. Better yet, lets all hope that the lady's son is one of his cell mates--thats punishment enough right there

After seeing the video of the elderly man being struck by a car, laying in the road and passers-by just looking and not helping, it is wonderful to hear how these people came to her defense and helped to catch this person! Now THESE are everyday heros and we could definitely use more of them!

Posted by: ZuLu Location: NC on Jul 8, 2008 at 01:24 PM
He's a real man isn't he? Afraid to attack someone of his ilk!!

Posted by: Cactus Location: Strabane, NC on Jul 8, 2008 at 01:09 PM
Now this is a real "thug", and coward.
